I've worked for years with a lady in the library that is just plain out obnoxious, she's a control freak so I'll refer to her as "Boss Hogg". I am the eighth female in twelve years that has been hired that Boss Hogg has had trouble getting along with, and that's no fluke. She has a split personality. She will be nice to everyone but me in my department, and if she does speak to me it is in a threatening or offensive manner. Another colleague resigned over the stress Boss Hogg caused her all because she was doing her job. Boss Hogg is not a boss my any means. She has been written up various times for causing interpersonal troubles with her colleagues and had to sign a waiver saying that if she wanted to keep her job, in no way would she be allowed to supervise or give orders to anyone. You think she remembers that? NO! We have a computer lab in the library and it is impossible to keep a library totally silent. Students will be talking in a low voice among themselves and here Boss Hogg goes to shush them up and threaten to call security on them! She will stand over people until they are quiet. Now I would take that as a threat! I have witnessed these "shushings" and Boss Hogg is always making a scene, causing more harm than helping. She ran a girl down the hallway for a dime just because the girl forgot to pay for a copy at the copier! She is just so mean about "shushing" people that it offends them and they will not comply to her wishes. She expects everyone to be quiet and then turns around and gets on the phone at the help desk. She will talk so loud and cackle like a hen, but it is alright for her because she is Boss Hogg. I've seen students get up and walk out because she was disrupting their study time. But as Boss Hogg is fond of saying, "Do as I say, not as I do." She thinks herself to be more important than she actually is. I can tell when she has been talking about me to other faculty or staff members. They will come to her for help rather than me. Who can blame them? I have people come and tell me things she has said about me and I've had students tell me that Boss Hogg was making fun of me one day to another colleague at the help desk. Now, I can't control what people say to each other about me, but when two so called "professionals" act like this in front of students, that's it! And nobody won't do a thing because she is too close to retirement. She is so well known in the community for her obnoxious behavior that people will confront me outside of work at stores to complain what a heel Boss Hogg is. I've tried sitting down and talking to her. Forget that! She is unreasonable, she's always right, and she's always smug about it, too. One time she said something mean about someone to me, to which I replied, "God is our judge, you have no right to judge that person." Well, a couple of days later she approached me and said she apologized for that incident. I told her it was fine, we were all human. She rudely interrupted me and emphatically raised up her hand and said loudly, "I'M NOT APOLOGIZING TO YOU! I'M APOLOGIZING TO MY SAVIOR!" Just like Aunt Esther! She waits until there are people around, especially students and tries to correct me. Someone will come to the help desk and ask me a question, she will answer it. She is always trying to undermine me on the job. I've stood up to her, it does no good. I love my job and the only other option is to wait for her to retire and try to ignore her until then. I've even had people approach me from other departments saying that they didn't see how I worked with her, that they wouldn't last a week. And that is an accurate picture of my job situation. To quit would be admitting defeat, which is exactly what she wants me to do.
