I started this "fantastic" new job with a smaller, fairly new company 6 months ago as project coordinator. My duties were to get the project managers to use the proper forms, get their billings submitted on time, watch their profit margins, etc.
As usual, there is *ONE* person who feels he is exempt from any of the company's efforts. This coworker consistantly turns in his paperwork LATE and on the WRONG form.
After MANY heated confrontations, coworker tells me the President (my boss) told him he could "turn in his work on whatever he wanted, just so long as the information was correct". News to me!!! Pres was on vacation, so I called him and asked if he'd said such a thing. He says he told this person they were to use what everyone else is using, and I was in charge of that. Just as I figured, coworker lied. Or did he?
The very next Friday in our staff meeting, Pres wanted to discuss the issue of using the correct forms. He proceeds to make me look like an ass in front of the whole room, then asks "Can you give me one good reason why everyone must use this form?" I looked at him, boggled, and said "Yes, the main reason is standardization, inwhich YOU wanted everyone to use the same paperwork".. He then proceeds to tell me that it "doesn't matter which form they use, as long as the information is correct". WTF?????
SO STOP COMPLAINING TO ME ABOUT WHAT THIS PERSON DOES OR DOESN'T DO, BECAUSE YOU ARE HELPING ENABLE HIS BEHAVIOR BY BEING A WISHY WASHY BOSS!!!
Six months of beating my head on my desk trying to get everyone on the same page with a standard process, just to have Pres discredit every effort I made up until that point. (keep in mind, only ONE person ever fought the form). I was sooo pissed off... I left the meeting, and as I walked out the door, I told another co-worker to get a roll of toilet paper and write their info on it, and be sure to wipe their a$$ with it before they turn it in, cause "it doesn't matter as long as the info is correct"...
I haven't quit (yet), but I am giving my resignation on Monday and going back to a large company where there are consequences and accountability.

Classic case of right person, wrong job. You sound very capable and exacting, however the company's culture is anything but. The president of the firm is probably lax in his procedures as well. Until they lose their shirt, or slackers abuse the current system to submit inadeauate or inaccurate information, it will remain the same. You do indeed belong in a larger and more structured corportate environment. Good luck!

Twiz - I personally spoke with each manager during this process and asked for input on the forms. They all loved it but *one*. The deal is, this *one* has the same last name as the president - get my drift? I haven't burned any bridges, and even if I did, doesn't matter, I will never work there again EVER. LOL Confessor - I think you are right. Being with a large organization for years, I've come to expect certain procedures to be followed, and consequences for lax performance. Lesson learned - no more small "new" companies for me! Cube - maybe? LOL

You may have only heard one complaint, but my guess is he got more than one complaint from the other employees. You calling must have been the last straw so he called a meeting. What he should have done was talked to you in private about the feedback so both of you could work out a better solution, instead of stabbing you in the back. Depending on how much you like it there, I would consider talking to him about it. Though you may have already burned the bridge by walking out. In any case, good luck and keep us posted on how it goes next week!
