Heartless! wish I could have shot him

I was a production manager, and I busted one of the 2nd shift guys drinking on break for the 3rd time. With multi-million dollar equip. not to mention his personal safety at stake, I had to let him go. (was hard, he was a friend too) bossman made me fight his unemployment and won, the guy was hitting bottom all the way around when his brother called. I was in bosses office with bookkeeper when call came in, boss put it on speakerphone. It seemed his family was concerned he may commit suicide due to severe depression over loosing his job while trying to fight his alcoholism. His family wondered if some of his friends from work could go visit or try to help him out. Boss agreed to pass it on and hung up and started laughing! Boss told me he hoped the guy did attempt suicide because then it would be on my head not the bosses because I was the one who busted and fired him. Boss thought it would be great addition to my resume, ability to inflict terminal punishment!
Unfortunatly for me I had put up with 10 years of his crap and that was the last straw of many, I found another position, put in 3.5 weeks notice and the boss talked me into staying, was soo sorry for the 'little jokes' etc. didn't realize how they affected people... would I give him chance to make amends, after all I was valued employee 3rd in command out of 37. I decided to give it try and he was much better, until 1 week after the new position I had been offered was filled, then fired me, and laughed because I got screwed out of the other job, and I better hope no one called the shop for references. 10 years of dedication and nothing to show except his contempt. He blackballed me from the industry in our area by word of mouth, and after 23 years in one specialization it is very hard to get an interview while trying to change careers. Of course he covered traks so well I don't even have legal recourse! Just hope he gets his someday, and hope I find out about it so I can enjoy it. (note: the fired friend was able to dry out, moved out of state got a better job and is doing very well, we keep in touch weekly by email).

Ouch! Shot him? Then you'd be just as bad. But I guess it would probably release a lot of stress. <@ @>

Yep your all right, I should have known, will know better in future. job hunt going well, found one that got bad taste from old boss but wouldn't tell me why, and decided to give me chance based on my experience. Different field, but am really enjoying it and getting along well with everyone and think I'll be very happy in long run, who knows maybe they did me a favor.

Reading your story I got a funny feeling that your boss was going to do something like that before I got to the end. Sometimes you just have to trust your gut in these situations and jump ship. You knew what type of person he was (and is!). People like that will change only temporarily to get what they want. Next time stick with your gut! Hope all is well with you finding a new job...

Oh man, what a sociopath! This is the most evil boss story I've read on here. I'm sorry this happened to you. Hindsight is 20/20. It's too bad we don't have 20/20 foresight... I'm glad to hear you keep in touch with the guy who you had to fire.

Your story just reinforces my deeply held belief that if you want to leave a place, leave, stay gone, don't look back. Don't accept any counteroffers or pot sweeteners.
