Much of my experience in the topsy-turvy world of jobschmob came from working in radio broadcasting. It is one of wildest and most cutthroat work environments you can imagine. Visit krud.com for great radio cartoons and tales-and remember, they're real!
At any rate, my first big gig was at a station that was privately owned. I got to see it all there-females employees vying to see who would have sex with the owner, a general manager who was a liar, thief, cokehead, and pervert and all at the same time. You get the picture. Anyone skilled or pleasant to work with left, and eventually I resigned too.
At the time I resigned, the station was once again in a fiscal crisis. Since I knew the automation system the best, it meant that even more money would be spent trying to run this sinking ship. I should also add that I had a degree in communications and lots of practioal experience. My departure could mean nothing but trouble for them. My letter was coolly accepted, and the GM said now I could "tell everyone I was quitting". I informed him that was his job, and went about the business of transitioning out.
The next to last day I was there, one of our lead sales reps approached me about helping to record a client commercial the following Tuesday. I informed her I couldn't do that. "Why?!!" she snapped. "Because I'm leaving here tomorrow for good...". She went nuts, saying she'd lose clients, the other staff didn't know how to run the station, etc. The lying GM had assured her my resignation was just a ploy and that I wouldn't leave. A liar to the last.

Thanks to all who replied to this or wants to. It's rumored that the krud.com website had to abandon it's feedback section (similar to jobschmob) because the stories mentioned so much illegal or illicit activity (e.g. inappropriate sex, drug use outright theft, harassment, etc.) Any one else got some good radio stories. I'd list more of mine, butthose who've never been in the biz will think I'm sick or making it all up!

Just when I think nothing corrupt can ever surprise me again, something else pops up. Yes I certainly believe you, I was in another very quiet line of work and nobody wants to believe my stories either. I've seen medical doctors walk out on me when I tried to tell them how certain injuries happened. Two work connected para shrinks discontinued seeing me for mandated sessions. Can they spell patient abandonment? My family got sick hearing about it. The last blog I tried shut down. And because I worked for very vindictive and nosy people who have too much time on their hands I tell my stories in drips and drabs.

Hey Walking, go to bullyonline.com. They can hook you up with others that have gone through workplace psychological injury and will not have sympathetic burnout over what you tell them. Part of what happens in a sick workplace is that the ones singled out or mobbed are subjected to psychological torture that has long-lasting effects. A while back on this website, a woman complained that two or three other workers were ganging up on her, including one who had mirrors all over her desk and apparently coughed loudly or moved her chair abruptly when the victim was typing a document. Some commented that the victim was a little bit off her rocker. Well, I've worked in an office were the secretary had mirrors mounted around her desk and wall, went through the trash, eavesdropped. It took years and the loss of dozens of employees before she was gotten rid of by the new owner of the company after he received tons of anonymous tips about her. Trying to explain the effect such a toxic person can have on you can exhaust others. Good luck and good health to you!

oh my, radio broadcasting....and you thought office drama was bad? In my experience with this sometimes exciting always B.S. business I've seen it all: egomaniacs, rampant drug use (at staff meetings no less!), favoritism to the nth degree regardless of talent or lack thereof, consultants who don't know the difference between Madonna and Metallica, "favors" for jobs/promotions/raises, some of the biggest phonies on the planet, oh the list is too large. When you turn on the radio and wonder "how did that clown get such a cool job?" now you know.

Oh, this all sounds sooo familiar. I worked in radio for about five years. It was awful. Everyone sleeping with everyone else. Married disk jockeys sleeping with teeny boppers, station managers boinking sales women, it was all too much for me. Lots of drinking. Lots of losers who hung around. People getting fired fo no real reason at all. It was sick, it was dysfunctional.
