I'm full of writing today.....Another recruiter story

I was placed in my current (yet outsourcing) job by a very friendly recruiter who was excited about my resume when she called. She not only made a point of trying to place me, but also started acting like my best buddy, even though she's 40-something and I'm 27 (26 at the time). She'd talk to me about my resume, then about her men of the week, and how hard it is to meet a guy in NYC, about her personal life and her weekend at the beach, etc. At one point, we even went to a couple bars together "just to keep touch"--my mistake since I really did think she was a friend.

So my job got outsourced, and I call the agency. I'm told, "Buddy recruiter doesn't work here anymore, but I'm her replacement." Luckily, I had Buddy Recruiter's personal email address on my Yahoo account, so I looked her up and contacted her. Lo and behold, she's a recruiter for another agency now, and sure she'd love to help me, walks me around and calls me a genius, etc.

So, she gets people sending resumes out (so she says), and by the end of that week, gets me 1 interview for that Monday. Okay. They prep and coach me for it, the whole time she's glowing about me being a "genius."

A week after the interview goes by.....nothing. I call to follow up and am told, "Well, they liked you. I hope we hear something. The HR lady is on vacation, so next week we should know sumpin', ok sweetheart? OMG I HOPE YOU GET THIS JOB!!!"

Another week. Crickets. I call to follow up--Well, we still haven't heard yet, but we're still emailing you out....

And another week. Crickets. I call, Buddy is on her lunch, so I leave a message. No call back at all this time, even to say Hi.

It's been 3 weeks since that interview, and no followup call, no rejection, nothing--crickets. I am now with a new agency that is actually GETTING me interviews with feedback.

So long, Buddy.

You are full of something for sure. Cynic is an accurate moniker for you. Grow up. Every posting you place is ladened in whining and "poor me" get over yourself. You have often in your ramblings judged just about everyone for their unprofessional behavior while you play "Sex in the City" with a recruiter?! It's no guess that you are 27 going on 16. I may sound harsh but you need to wake up. Clearly you are a bright, articulate young person but far to focused on the negative and blaming. Until you get off that nothing is going to work including YOU!

Well, I've never worked with recruiters, at least not in my own job hunt. But I've dealt with a few when I was screening candidates for a tech firm. This one breached a line when she started socializing with a client. That's my first sign that she's probably not too competent. Also, sounds like she promises more than she delivers to both sides. Raving about a client is a bad idea. "Genius" is a pretty abused term. She should have been talking about how you fit in with the company and how your skills matched their needs.

Milkmaid: where do you get off? IMO We help each other on this site and listen and vent. You were brutal and it was uncalled for. Leave cynic alone! She's obviously going through a lot of crap right now. There's such a thing as constructive criticism you know. Keep your nasty judgements to yourself if you can't be constructive.

Milkmaid: Why do you come on here to lecture all of us? If you think we complain too much on...um....a complaint site, then GET OFF AND GO POST SOMEWHERE ELSE? How hard is it, or are you just a bully? Why don't YOU get over yourself already??????

Sorry about that, I read your other post to me, which was in response to your other post to me, haha!

Ok, now that we've cleared the air, let's get back to recruiters. I'd like to hear from some other posters on this one, since I have no experience with recruiters. I would think, however, that hunting for a new job on your own might give you more control and also more experience in the intricacies of the hunt. There are tons of good books out there and you can buy then cheap just about anywhere, including most online bookstores (I always buy second hand). I am impressed with some of the links on this site, too.

Well, it seems that I have stirred things up here. I have Cynics forgiveness and again appreciate that.I spoke without having the full cicture which was my mistake and one that most interviewers would also jumo to. However, I think that if we are all here to accomoplish something, to forge ahead then it can't all be "poor me" and commeserating on our misfortunes. A devils advocate from your own tribe has a voice. If you can't hear it from your own what chance do you have from the enemy? Look, so much of this carrer quest ( I have been on that road 30 years) is perspective. You can't change THEM you can only change how they effect you. If I angered some of you GOOD. That is a more productive emotion than wallowing in the angst.

Corporate Ladder Rung: AssociateM. in Wisconsin(06/24/2006)
True, you cannot change them. And true also that you don't have to give them the power to annoy you. Fill your life with other things and it won't matter so much! (But, it will still bug the hell out of you from time to time.) I do have to wonder what happened to professional behavior though. Anyone else care to jump in?

Corporate Ladder Rung: Mailroommilkmaidinwisconsin(06/24/2006)
"Professional behavior" went the way the flavor of the month. Corporate structure now revolves around what current guru a.k.a. spin master they happen to subscribe to OR how they were treated. I have yet to meet a Scott Peck,Zig Ziegler or Roy Williams in the HR office. Yet the standards of recruitment and interview seem ever to evolve, often in a downward spiral. Rememeber the days when you get the standard, "Tell me where you see yourself in 5 years?" I see myself with YOUR job and doing it far better always ran thru my head. I think the team approach has a chance. At least with luck you get a diverse reaction and melded opinion. I always found myself trying to read the interviewr the minute I sat down. Scanning the office to see what the interests were, the family, noting the speech and grammar pattern, mode of reference: all so that I could be who they wanted me to be. MISTAKE of MISTAKES. Professional decorum is important but a modicum of personality speaks volumes.

A job is not worth having if I have to be something else in order to get it. Sorry. I guess that's why I'll stick with mine for the time being.

It's cool. don't worry about it.
