Just for fun: Add to the "Deadly Recruiters" list

I have some additions to the "7 Deadly Recruiters" link in the right sidebar. Add your own if you like!

1) The recruiter who is stuck in the past. For instance, even though your resume says "English Degree--1998" and you've been working in sales since then, they refuse to focus on your current sales experience and instead grill you about why an English major would go into sales.

2) The recruiter who acts super-duper excited, says "I'm SO going to get you a job. I love you!", calls you every day for a week with "possibilities," but then never sets you up for any interviews. (Also known as the recruiter you have to chase down).

3) The one who BEGS the client to interview you, even though the client insists that your resume doesn't qualify. In typical sales person fashion, they attempt to sell you to a begrudging HR person or hiring manager at the company. Thus, when you arrive for the interview, the recruiter is all, "You are SOOOOO gonna get this job," and the interviewer is cold and rejects you at the door.

4) The recruiter who doesn't tell you when a company has turned you down, but continues to say, "Well we haven't heard anything yet, but I'll let you know!" 6 weeks later, he says, "Oh--that. They passed on that one the second you walked out. Sorry!"

5) The recruiter who doesn't believe you about your past. For instance, when you say you have a master's degree or that you support up to 25 people on the trading floor because your company is international (true for me), they look at you funny and go, "Oh, reeeeeeally. That's unuuuusuall......"

Ok. Everyone else's turn! Enjoy!

Oops, edit: The recruiter who doesn't believe you about your past should read: "about your background."

just me(06/23/2006)
The recruiter who you've never dealt with before who just finds your resume online and leaves you a phone message that just says "I've found something that is absolutely a perfect fit for!" and doesn't mention where or what the job the job is. Then when you call back, there is no specific job or the one they were talking about an hour before has magically been filled---but "while they have you on the phone, let's talk about your skillset for our database". GRRRRRRRRR.

Oh, yeah. I forgot about those!! Expand that to, "they have a "fit"," but then when you actually sit down and talk, they realize "Oh. Maybe I don't have a fit." Turns out they haven't really read your resume, they just let their webcrawler get keywords.

The Recruiter who asks you all sorts of questions about what you do because THEY have no clue, and are trying to "sell" you to the client. The client knows what you're talking about, YOU know what you're talking about, but since the recruiter needs a commission, YOU and the CLIENT need to waste time educating the worthless recruiter on YOUR FIELD 101, so she can place you. Save time, money and hair dye and Eliminate The Middleman, people!

The recruiter who ignores the fact that your name is Mary and insists on calling you by someone else's name because you just seem like a "Jennifer". REALLY!

Are we talking bimbo recruiters here?

Corporate Ladder Rung: VPthe cynic(06/23/2006)
Bimbos, shady people, or any recruiter who purports to help but is generally useless.

In my little town, recruiters are usually people who can't find work doing anything else. On the other had, there are professional headhunters who know the ropes.

This story reminded me of the quote from Benjamin Franklin, "Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain, and most fools do." For some reason, in our culture, hyper-critical, anal- retentive idiots are the ones who are setting the standards at the workplace, instead of being recognized as the fools that they are.

Sometimes I think so too, Dee. In a workplace where "you're overqualified" is an excuse to hire people with no education, and where being a jerk gets you further than being ethical, it seems that "idiotic and b--chy" are the folks who often get ahead in today's world.

I just got one from the original list today--one who doesn't read. My resume distinctly says what university I attended. The first question out of the recruiter's mouth was, "So, are you from this area originally?"
