No Raise or Performance Review

Hey Workers of America,

I have been with the same company for 6 years. In that 6 years my duties and skills have surpassed the job I was hired for and have not been promoted or compensated for it. I have not had a performance review in 3 years or a raise in 4 years. Also, I've NEVER been paid overtime(and I have worked plenty of it). I've tried to speak to my boss about it, but he just ignores or patronizes me, but over the last 4 years, he's given me 3 other people's jobs, and there is a guy here who does nothing but answer the phone all day and he has a B.S. in accounting and is more than capable of doing the work. He knows I'll get the work done so he just figures he doesn't have to pay me anymore to do it. I really want to file charges against this company with the Dept. of Labor, but that's probably slower than waiting for my union. Also, he knows I have a disabled parent I help support, so quitting is not an option. Going to Human Resources is a joke because they ignore me too. They think if they ignore you, you'll go away.

I don't know if I should try hang on here since I have 6 very hard years of work invested with this company, or just pack it in. In this economy, I really don't want to, but I can't work like this anymore. I'm so stressed out I've become sick and may possibly have to spend time in the hospital. If I go in the hospital, who is going to look after my disabled parent?

Nobody can give you anything you don't willingly take (except a virus or an STD =) so stop taking it! The sentence you wrote is key. You said :"He knows I'll get the work done so he just figures he doesn't have to pay me anymore to do it." Exactly. You said it yourself. You know by now that he is not going to walk up to you one day and say "Mr or Ms. workin4nuthin, You've been bustin your butt, howz about a raise?" So why do you expect it? Stop doing the extra work. Stop stressing yourself out and take care of only what you need to do to keep your job. Just stop. It may sound simplistic, but I really believe it's just that easy. If you want more money or a chance to advance your career and get rewarded for it, you'll have to find it someplace else. Do you agree, fellow Jobschmobbers?

I think he should take a vacation. It'll be a little preview of what it will be like when he gets fed up and quits.

You have 6 years "invested" but what's the return on your investment? Nothing! Why can't you quit? You had a job before this job, didn't you? Find another job. 4 years with no raise is completely unacceptable.

There's nothing wrong with moving onto something new. Nothing at all. Get your resume out there & get some interviews!
