So I hope this isn't true, cause I think it's a load of crap that companies do this. Kind of makes me regret the times I fought with my wife over email. I said a lot fo stuff that I wouldn't want anybody reading. Maybe I should know better, but you think if you're not sending smut or smut jokes through email you won't have to worry.
But what I can't get is why reading my e-mai is fine but tapping my phone is not. Isn't that the same thing?? We need LAWS against this sort of thing. They say it is to protect themseves from people eaking company material, but ok then how come they don't listen to my phone conversations? And I can easiy burn a cd or send files to my USB drive if I really want to share company info. And they won't be the wiser. So why do they hafta read my e-mail content??

The survey gathered responses concerning e-mail security from 406 companies in the United States and the United Kingdom with more than 1,000 employees.
In both regions, 38 percent of respondents said they employed staff to read or otherwise analyze outbound e-mail. In the United States, 44 percent of companies with more than 20,000 employees said they hire workers to snoop on workers' e-mail.

What a sorry state of affairs. Unfortunately, I think that's true, the part about only being able to keep your thought private. It's out of control.

Companies of all sizes have been doing this for years. It goes on a lot more than people think. I used to work at a large Insurance company that not only tracked e-mails and instant messages but could recreate EVERY keystroke made on thier PC's. People who "checked out" a company laptop to "work" at home would often be surprised to get asked about the birthday party flyers etc. that they created on the laptop. Pretty scary stuff. It's bad enough that you have to worry about back-stabbing co-workers, but with Big Brother tracking every move you have to keep in mind that the ONLY thing you can keep private in the office are your own thoughts.
