Years ago I was working down south, away from my "up north" family, whom I hadn't seen in a few years. One of my sisters was getting married, and I asked for 1 whole week of vacation to attend the wedding and spend some time back home. Mind you, I had a week coming, but we were forbidden from taking one consecutive week. It had to be doled out in days.
I begged and pleaded. I couldn't see flying all the way home for just two days, but didn't want to miss my sister's wedding. So I quit my job.
I came home for the wedding, spent two weeks visiting friends and relatives and having a blast. When I went back to south to prepare finding a new job, my old boss called and invited me back.
That's just how crazy some bosses can be, I guess. I'd have been a happy employee (and back to work sooner) if he'd let me take a week, but he just couldn't make that happen. I'd like to name him here, but I won't.

Good for you! I believe people carve their own paths in life. By standing up for what you feel is right, you gained the respect of your boss, your coworkers and your family. I hope your story inspires others stuck in similar situations!
