Your advice on resignation....

I need to give my 2 weeks notice, but I've heard this company actually escorts you out the door the moment you hand in the resignation letter. I can't afford 2 weeks without pay...but I feel a little strange saying "by the way I won't be in to work on Monday or ever again"... If they are going to play that game, I will play that game too... but I'm not sure if they will actually pay the two weeks out (even if I'm not working). Any tips on this???? I only know employees in the past have been escorted out the same day - I have no idea if they were paid.

My advice is to tell them on Friday, "by the way, I won't be here n Monday, bye". The 2 week notice thing is ONLY for the benefit of management, If you have observed them "escorting" people out, they cannot be trusted. THEY do NOT trust their employees. Do NOT trust them. This is not about them being fair. If you need the 2 weeks pay, do NOT give them the notice. THE END. They are not allowed by law to say anything negative about you (or you can sue), they are only allowed to say that you worked for them, from one date to another. Period. They are not your family, they will not look out for you. If they were letting YOU go, they would not give you 2 weeks notice. Don't give it to them.

My husband just mentioned, if you have vacation time coming, take that first, get paid, then don't come back. That way, they cannot take your vacation pay. As far as them paying 2 weeks, just because you "gave notice"-forget it.

I'm with Dharmadee's husband. Take vacation and then quit when you get back. You deserve it!

Your place of employment is devious, be sneaky in return. This is a matter of your financial survival. As soon as you land another job call in sick, take your sick leave, then your vacation. Or take vacation then your sick leave, whatever works better for you.///Very slowly start taking your personal possessions home starting now, replace them with junk you don't need. Drive a different car to the new job or borrow one if you can.......And for any future plans save enough money to bridge a small employment gap. Even workmen's comp and unemployment insurance take a few weeks to kick in. Think of it as FY fund.

If you can do it, start the new job and keep the old one by taking your vacation days, sick days and any other paid personal time you may have coming...

I gave my two weeks notice to my direct report this morning. So far I'm still at my deks, but the big guy doesn't know yet... I'll keep you all posted!

Always have your "2 week notice" notarized and keep a copy. That way they can never say that you were fired.

Sheesh! How can you take that chance if that in fact is their policy, then they have left you no choice. I'm afraid you'll have to "clam up" and just be prepared to resign and leave the same day. They should pay you for the 2 weeks, but they are not obligated to in most states. I couldn't afford to miss 2 weeks pay either. You've got a tough call. Is there anything in writing anywhere about giving proper notice?? Keep us informed. Good luck and Congrats Mate!

I looked through my employee handbook and I don't see anything in writing...but what if I missed it on documentation I signed when I started (thinking I'd be here for 10 years)

I always got a kick out of the fact that my company's employee handbook makes much of the fact that my employment is "at will." Yet elsewhere, they say they want two weeks' notice....

Do you have another job lined up yet? Maybe they'll let you start immediately.
