College grad long-term unemployment

Posted on 03/15/2006 by Throwaway

What job? With a great college education, and no crime or drug record, I'm not being allowed to establish myself in the labor force. There's no government agency or NGO program explicitly devoted to ending long-term unemployment of college graduates. We need a new Works Progress Administration.
To discuss individual situations would just play into Dr. Pagloss' Social Darwinism.
If you think something serious should be done to end long-term unemployment among college graduates, don't honk. Just write to your elected representatives and demand it!

Start the letter and I'm sure a bunch of us would be happy to sign our name and send it along. I agree about the unemployment problem... I find myself complaining about work, but really I should just be thankful I have work!

Agreed. Something has to be done. It begs the age old question. How can I get the experience everyone wants me to have, if no one will hire me to get the experience?

Exempliary. Great idea. I'll sign.

I have taken college classes, but am not a college graduate. I've found that your work ethic and the way you present yourself are worth more than any college degree. At my last job (manager in a pharmaceutical company), I was in charge of hiring. Few times would I prefer a college grad with no experience or proven track record over a non-college grad with the qualities and experience the company needed. I am now with another company, and work with almost all college grads, including one person who has a PhD from Harvard. Having a degree doesn't entitle you to employment.

Life is the best experience- I agree with you. I have a B.S. - and that is exactly what it is...BS! I remember little about most of my classes! Let us all be thankful our fellow M.D's have gone to college, but for the rest of us...life certainly is more beneficial than text books!
