Where I work, like many workplaces, people at the end of the day scramble to their cars like pilots on a carrier scramble to their jets, but there is no air traffic controller.
You know what goes down. Everyone punches out, then most everyone scrambles to their cars in that mad dash to get outta there as soon as possible. Then, the take-off becomes hazardous as everyone takes off all in one big pulse. There are two ways to avoid the hazards:
1: take off and get out FIRST
2: wait a few minutes and let everyone else take off before you do so.
My workplace has a parking lot that is almost ideal for punch-out scrambles. It is a half-circle with a "main drag" that I call the "employee runway". (I work at an airport.) During the day, as a previous shift leaves, people move their cars to more favourable parking spaces, to get a faster getaway when they punch out. It's a good thing we don't have flying cars. That's becuse airline pilots would have to be careful when taking off from Runway 22 Left as people would cut them off! Or, the control tower would have to suspend departures for 5 minutes 3 times a day, corresponding to the 3 punch-out scrambles that occur daily at 3:25PM, 11:25PM, and 7:25AM.
One can always daydream of the ultimate vehicle to commute with. My vote would be the Lockheed F-35. This gem can hover and land into a parking space and unlike the Harrier, can go double-sonic. Kind of wasteful on diesel though. :)
