God, I can't tell you how true this is for me. When I had a great boss some years back who let me do my thing, gave me assignements and let me run with them autonomously, I was a "top performer". I felt trusted, appreciated and that my contributions mattered. I felt a freedom to arrive within a half hour window of time and leave or take lunch whenever I needed to. As a result, I never minded working extra hours or Saturdays when needed. Enter a changed environment and a new boss. My whole attitude altered dramatically. This new boss was a real tool, micromanaged, had strict guidelines as to what hours were acceptable, etc...totally treated us like kindergarteners. As a result, I felt caged. I felt rebellious and it showed. I no longer gave my best effort. I cut corners, stole extra time during the work day by taking longer in the bathroom, longer breaks, the stairs instead of the elevator, that type of thing... 2 years later I had had enough and I left the company. Moral of the story: they had a great worker who really gave his all and then they went and turned him against the company by trying to put him in a cage and under a microscope for no other reason than an idiot manager's agenda. Plain stupidity.

It's all about real stress vs imagined stress. It doesn't matter to your body which one. If it's happy, you'll be happy.

There've been multiple studies done on the ratio of overtime to personal production on the job. Seems that people are just as productive in a 40 hour week as they are in a 50 hour week..go figure.
