I kind of fell into a job that I really didn't want but thought I'd stay at until something better came along. It's been 2 years now and after a ton of resumes going out and several interviews, I'm still trapped in this job I hate. My main complaint is my hours-I'm supposed to work 8:30-5:30 with a 1 hour lunch but wind up working through my lunch and staying late most nights. Also, I have 17 years of experience and I'm doing entry level work which is so boring! The boss is the most difficult person I have ever worked for in my career.
Should I just quit this hell hole or hang in there until something better comes along or should I go into the uncertain world of being a temporary?

Personally I would hang in there until I found a new job. Nothing is more satisfying than giving your notice at a crappy job when you know you have a new job lined up. Plus, it is easier to find a new job when you still have a job. If you are out of work, potential employers will question why you aren't working. Good luck!

I'd hang in there too, until you have secured new employment. Try modifying your resume and give it a different look if you have had it out for a long time with no bites. I hate my job schedule too - I get to work around 8:10ish, but nobody else shows up until 9:30ish, and they expect me to stay and work until 6:30/7:00 like they do! I also work through my lunch (and don't take 2 hours like everyone else) just because I feel guilty leaving on-time when everyone else stays! Such is life, but that is exactly what is is life--and living it at the rules of someone else isn't worth it! Being the only working mom in the office, I think they forget that staying late and going for drinks isn't an option. I was told "that is how you climb the corporate ranks", thanks, but I'll stay on the bottom and just get my job done and leave! In 50 years I'll remember playing with my son, but I won't remember drinking beers with people I'm stuck with 40 hours a week!

Why don't you try hooking up with a recruiter? I know they get a bad rep here because most of them are truly dumber than a bag of hammers, BUT I can tell you if you find a good one, they will fix your resume and conduct a totally discreet job search on your behalf. With all those years of experience, it sounds like the only thing standing between you and a much better job are a few contacts and reworked resume. Good luck!

It's going to be tough no question, but you'll feel better about yourself in the long run if you just hang in there. Everyday I watch the same group of execs go out for two hour lunches and are gone well before I am. I'm not a fan of my hours either. I'm typically here by 8:00 and well past 6:00. But one thing the powers that be will never be able to undermine and that's a strong work ethic. I'll settle for security and peace of mind over kissing up the corporate ladder anyday.

Never leave a job without having another one. I had a friend who did that and basically ended up crashing @ my house for about 6 months.

Tell em' all to go to h*ll. Ha - just kidding - we wish right. Hang in there bud... things will get better! If not, find a way to amuse yourself at the expense of others. It is priceless when you can be impish - which is what I practice very well each day!

Time for you to leave NOW. You even said you took a job you really didn't seek and are, by your estimation, overqualified. In two years you really haven't distinguished yourself to get promoted, if any possibilities existed, nor does it sound like they have promised anything to you. If you stay, you'll be miserable in the same rut looking for someone else to figure something out for you. Take the initiative yourself right now and leave. If you are as qualified as you say, are ambitious and enthusiastic, you'll find something more satisfying very soon.
