Illegal aliens

Last week I found out 2 of my coworkers are illegal aliens. I don't want to say I how I found out, but I will just say I came across some paperwork that should have been shredded by my boss and wasn't. I usually think of myself as a pretty liberal person, but now that I found this out I am pissed off! I spent all last week getting madder and madder because they are doing the same job as me, getting the same pay as me (to the best of my knowledge) yet they aren't paying a dime in taxes cuz nobody knows they are here! Now you could argue that they aren't getting social security or medicare or probably even 401K for that matter. But something about this still pisses me off. This should never be allowed! Nor would it be allowed if there wasn't something fishy going on. And how unfair that they hired these two instead of 2 Americans that need the jobs! I know of a few other people (legal U.S. citizens) who applied for their jobs when they were open and they were turned down. Should I report this to somebody? I'll probably lose my job if I do I guess...or at least be penalized someway either silently or otherwise. Anybody have any thoughts? And yes, I can prove it if I have to. Should I just mind my own business? I'm losing sleep.

I live in an area where the ratio of illegal aliens to American citizens is about 1 to 1. Don't hesitate to report these people to the I.N.S.. Your identity will be kept confidential and the I.R.S. reallllly doesn't like people that employ them. (wink, wink..nudge, nudge).

I second that. Don't be afraid to speak up - I think there's an anonymous tip line. Try Googling it...

SouthernProgrammer(01/23/2006)
You could always go here. http://www.illegalaliens.us/reportillegals.htm It is all anonymous.

Your employer is probably saving money (so he thinks) by having illegal aliens. He doesn't have to pay Social Security, Medicare Tax, or Worker's Comp. Report him. He's breaking the law and putting his company in jeopardy.

Got a grip on my indignation, and my sympathies are firmly with you. Your boss seems to have no trouble deliberately breaking laws. That would be a darn scary place to work. I'd report them on my way out the door.

Thank you all so much for your advice. I really appreciate it. I have decided to report these goings on. But first I am going to do some research on what my course of action should be and how I can protect myself. And I suppose that may mean having to get a new job.

The INS has an anonymous tip line on their website! (I know this because I'm INS fluent because my husband is a foreigner - but is a legal citizen and pays taxes and SS). I'll be the first person to endorse foreign relations, some of the best people I know are from Russia, Poland, Mexico - and they are hard workers. It is sad because people die everyday trying to get to the U.S. to live. With Ford cutting 30,000 jobs, concern is qualified. I personally would probably look the other way, just like I look the other way when I know bartenders who make about $90,000 a year in tips but only claims $2,500. It isn't right... You are in a hard situation, best of luck... I think we all support you with whatever decision you make.

SouthernProgrammer(01/24/2006)
>some of the best people I know are from Russia, Poland, Mexico> I totally agree and remember this country was FOUNDED by hard working foreigners. But the problem I see is that a lot come over here illegally and do not pay taxes but take the benefits that come from taxes WE pay. Also, if they are here illegally they are preyed upon by unscrupulous businessman. At times even kind people here can be taken advantage of. I have first hand knowledge of a family that is here illegally but was "adopted" by a Church and school. Money was raised by the Church and school and TRUCKLOADS of toys and goods were delivered to this familys house to help them while they got situated. Later, it was found out they had over $70,000 in a bank account. I know this from first hand knowledge.

SoutherProgrammer: It is hard to detect the bad apples from the good ones, I totally agree with what you wrote above. Not only do the 'undocumented workers' (I believe that is the PC term) take advantage of our system, but I have read that it actually increases our crime rate. This is a very difficult topic. I think most countries have this problem to some extent. I mean, I tried to jump the border myself to get into Mexico. That darn L.A. river...

SouthernProgrammer(01/24/2006)
It is a difficult topic, I would LOVE to give everyone a chance to come into our country but we have rules that must be followed. Look what happened when Castro opened the gates to empty his prisons...

tiredofbeingyourmomma(01/25/2006)
The problem here isn't the "aliens". It's the "illegal" part. There are programs to help people with serious threats to their lives get work approvals and stay here. Employers need to be held accountable FOR BREAKING FEDERAL LAWS. They are snubbing their noses at OUR government's inability to stop this craziness. What kind of an employer exploits illegal aliens and our own governemnt? Clearly, that is what this is. Please recall the plight of our immigrant ancestors was made far worse by predatory employers, and we need to understand this again. Okay, I have this out of my system now. And may we all be blessed for having concerns about what is right on this very complicated issue. Big issue: needs thoughtful discussion.

TiredMamma: WELL SAID! After reading your post you've really brought up some valid points. Being proud of your country also involves honoring what it stands for! Turn the dirty jerks in!
