Psychosomatic Office Mate

We have a major psychosomatic in our office. This week, the newest episode, she woke up with a soar throat and insisted it was strep and went to the doctor.(hello, after one day??? Those who have had strep know it is very painful). The doctor insisted all she had was a virus, and she demanded to be given an antibiotic anyway because she didn't trust his judgement. She has migraines, she can't eat red sauce because it upsets her stomach(and yet she'll eat at every fast food place around), she has tennis elbow, she has carpal tunnel, she is lactose sensative (but somehow still manages to bring back a shake at least 2 times a week), for every story you have..she has one worse! I can't take it anymore...

Maybe the doctor left a sponge in her head after her last brain surgery? By the way, these are often symptoms of an anxiety disorder and possibly depression. No kidding, and you aren't alone in your frustration. These folks can wear out anybody.

tiredofbeingyourmomma - funny you should mention that because she is also... seeing a therapist for anxiety and depression.

Strep throat can flareup in one day. When I had it, I was fine the night before and woke up with it so bad I couldn't even swallow. I guess I didn't know I was getting sick. You're right. It is painful. Your coworker could also be looking for attention. Is she frequently ignored, otherwise?

Cuboner, be very afraid: I am professional help. I usually don't toss out a serious observation based on a posting, but you identified a very common problem. Repeat, "it isn't me, it isn't me" Have fun, and take comfort that your irritation is your own protection!

Do you think this is the start of 'going postal'?

tiredofbeingyourmomma (12/07/2005)
RE your coworker:Don't have much specific info, but probably not. The be afraid remark refers to my self-mocking admission that I really am professional help. So, think about how many anxious and depressed folks there are (10% on any given day among the US adult population). This is not a static group: we all change based on many other circumstances from anxious to not, depressed to okay. As for YOU going postal, don't have enough info either (kidding). My strictly personal observation: the hardest part of anxiety is that can be contagious. Makes me want to bite my nails and eat my pencils!

And please forgive me if I alarmed you. Obviously, I am not as amusing as I think I am sometimes. My profound apology to you, Cuboner.

tiredofbeingyourmomma I'm offended that you apologized (kidding). We all come to this site for light-hearted chat, and by all means I was just teasing back at you when I mentioned the postal thing. You didn't alarm me. Heck, remember I work in Corp. America, it takes more than that to alarm me. ha ha I agree, that stuff can be contagious - now I have a soar throat! (heheheheh)

Thank you, Cuboner. I had myself fairly fussed up about this. Hope your day is delightful.
