Fool me twice, shame on me

I posted this as a comment, but since i'm in the mood to vent, I thought it was a good story too. I am fairly sure y'all can relate.

Where I work they have a nice habit of dangling sales bonuses or incentive money in front of us like carrots. Surprise, surprise when the bonuses never materialize. I was working on one very large account where the project leader told us he was putting together a large incentive package that included a paid trip to Hawaii when (not if) we met our goals. 10 of us busted our butts to make things happen, our eyes on the "carrot", lo and behold the account got dismantled and all our work was for nothing. Not a single word or apology from the PM about the stupid incentive package was ever uttered to us after that fiasco.

What is the saying? Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me?

A similar thing happened to me last year. We had a small "contest" storewide to sell service plans and the person who sold the most got a prize, (a gift-wrapped surprise , put on display all month). Our department usually wasn't able to participate but this time two people from our department actually one, me and another girl. We were both excited, however, when the time came we were told that management was disappointed that our store was behind the rest of the district, therefore we wouldn't get the prize on display. Instead we just got a note in our file and a candy bar or something equally lame, I forget what.

"lo and behold the account got dismantled and all our work was for nothing" Sounds like you didn't hit your goals... You are part of the problem if you are expecting to be rewarded when you fail.

I said the account "was dismantled"---not "we dismantled" the account. It had nothing to do with us or our work. It was due to a merger of our client's departments (as a result of an external acquisition) and totally unrelated to what we were doing. I bet you're a manager aren't you, B? You sure sound like one.

Yeah! Come on! Nowehere in the story did it say that they "failed". I bet you are a manager too with that all assuming attitude that someone is bitter because they "failed" and "expect" a reward. COME THE HECK ON! I've seen your type before. You guys are the types that wonder how else could it be that a company did not deliver a promised reward? Well the team failed of course. A company would never not deliver a reward when good work is done. CHA!

We get a yearly bonus based on company performance. For each of the nine years I have worked here I have seen the same scenario...each December we get glowing reports about how well we are doing (and we are doing well) and right at bonus time we get another report that says "Welllll...while things are good...they weren't THAT good and thus we have to be conservative on the bonus". Mind you I am grateful we get a bonus...but I would just rather get straight talk each time a report is made...
