Bosses get sick of ill workers

http://money.cnn.com/2005/10/20/news/economy/sick_days/index.htm?cnn=yes

So I found an article on CNN today that surprised me. I'm quoting what I'm interested in talking about:

"Sixty-two percent of the organizations reported they send sick employees home, while 41 percent educate employees on the importance of staying home when sick, and 36 percent try to foster a culture that discourages employees from coming to work sick."

Okay... as far as I know...any company I have ever worked with hates it when I call in sick. They ask me to come in when I'm sick... my boss comes in sick...

If corporate America is so concerned about 'sick germs' then let us stay home on the days we aren't feeling well.

How do all of your companies approach the 'sick' attitude.

Well my company has the whole Paid Time Off (PTO) bank thing so any day you call in sick is subtracted from your pool of days off. So nobody wants to stay home when sick because it means they lose a vacation day. And the company doesn't encourage you to stay home when sick at all. In fact, I dread calling in because it never is a welcomed response.

I have NEVER had a boss, manager or HR person encourage me to stay home when I am sick. In fact, my boss has called me at home on several occasions to ask me some nonsense work questions when I had been either out sick myself or taking care of my son when he is sick.

Most companies don't like you to call in sick. Especially if it's a kind of job they have to get someone to cover for them. Like restaraunt work. I would think that would be the worst because you would make everyone else sick.

In 30 years, I have never worked for anybody who encouraged, supported or easily accepted it when I had to call in sick. In fact, I've come to work noticeably ill to finish a project and bosses have told me I was a "trooper" and piled the work on.

I read that article too and it really ticked me off. Most places I have worked do give some sort of sick time either in PTO or Sick Balance. However, I get an occurrance point for calling in sick. People will start staying home when they're sick as soon as they stop being penalized for it.

We send our sick employees home; but then we reserve the right by policy to tell people they will be using their own paid time (if they've used it all, it's without pay). The rest of us don't want cooties. Don't share, stay home.

The story was as follows; if one of the bosses sent you home, payroll could not deduct anything. It never happened in the departments I had the misfortune to work in. The hand book pamphlet of rules was silent on that subject. Maybe it was an illusive myth dreamed up by high fever.

When I was working in childcare, there was allegedly a "sick policy" as far as allowing sick children into the classroom, but it was never followed, and sick employees calling out was not welcomed. Needless to say, we always had a lot of colds and flu running around. This was standard in the four centers I worked at. My job now is as an office manager/assistant/receptionist/Jack of All Trades in a small office. Technically, it is only the boss and me, although a few other people do share the space and phone lines, and might occassionally answer a call for us. I have only called out once in 2 1/4 years, and when I asked the boss if it would be paid sick time or if I should adjust my paycheck, he told me it would be paid, but not to make a habit of it. :-o I was relatively new to the job though, and he has since been really good about giving me vacation time when I request it, and when I wasn't feeling well Friday he told me to go ahead and leave early.

My work seems pretty cool about sick days. I've never heard anyone complain about someone who called in. Which is the way it should be. That said, I guess there can be cases where folks abuse it. And those special cases should ruin the policy for the rest of us, they should just be dealt with on a as-needed basis.
