Who can we blame?

Have you ever wondered who the idiot was that created the 40 hour, Mon-Fri work week? I mean, why not 35 hours? Or why not Mon-Thurs. What made them think that 2 days a week was rest enough? And then who was the bigger idiot that decided working 9-5 didn't include a lunch break, so they increased it to 8-5?

Where I used to work it was 37.5. Then they decided that this apparently wasn't long enough so they changed it to a 40 hour work week but didn't adjust any of our salaries. At another place I interviewed for they offered me a job, but wanted to make sure I "was aware" that their standard work week was 50 hours minimum. The salary they offered me was more than I was making but when you averaged out the $ over the 50 hours it was LESS for more hours!

What a coincidence! I was just sitting in my deluxe (ha) cubicle thinking that my father worked 40+ years until he could retire. Enjoyed himself for 9 years and then had a major stroke and is wheelchair bound and incapable of taking care of himself. I for one would work 4 10 hour days if I could get a three day weekend...

Very depressing. It's true, we spend more time with the people work with than our own families. Something has to change - why can't we enforce more of a 'work from home 1-2 day a week culture'

Ever notice that other countries don't have these insane work week expectations? And I think they are much more content than we are. For some reason, in America culture, you're looked down upon or you feel guilty for not working like a dog to get "things". And then we're a slave to those things. Things Schmings!

In Pennsylvania, they consider 35 hours a week full time -- an eight hour day, 6.5 hours actually worked, two 15 minute breaks, and an hour lunch break.
