I decided I was not going to show up for my shift that day and send flowers in place instead. So I had flowers sent to my boss with a card that said "Roses are red, violets are blue, you're a horse's as$ and a BIG ONE TOO."
BUT... I was 17 and very cocky when I did this. It haunted me for quite some time because I lived in a small town and he had the card in writing. I was dumb enough to have the flower place include my name at the bottom of the card. At the time, I thought it was hilarious so I bragged to all my friends about it, who in turn told other people and their parents who owned some of the businesses that I was planning on trying to get a job at. Well, once they found out, they would not hire me because it showed "severe immaturity" as one guy's dad put it. I ended up getting the only job I could get at a junkyard outside of town where the drunk of an owner didn't know what day it was, much less what I had done to deserve to be exiled to the junkyard. For a good couple years I was bitter and shocked that people didn't think it as funny as I did. Now, I cringe when I think about it! As an aside, the "horse's as$" apparently now takes it in stride, he recently attended an event I was at back home and he showed me he had the card laminated and he kept it in his wallet for entertainment.

Sounds like the guy didn't deserve it. Most real jerks actually LIKE it when they get told off-it means that they're getting to you.

That's probably true...that's why he kept it in his wallet. He was proud of how he got to you. On the other hand, maybe he just had a really good sense of humor. =)

It just goes to show that you have to be so careful of the bridges you burn. It doesn't sound like this burning bridge will be permanent, though. You were only 17 at the time. If your ex-boss holds a grudge against you for too long into your adulthood, it would show immaturity on his own part. Since he's already had the card laminated and laughed over it, there's no damage done. After all, how can a grown man stay mad forever at something that a 17-year-old kid did? P.S. Don't try something like this as an adult, though. You may never be able to live it down, and if the boss is rich, powerful & well connected, your career may never recover; and you could literally be destroying your social and financial future. Think of the big picture first!
