Pirate Ship

Pirate Ship = Allegiance to the ship (company), but not to each other. They'll sell your leg if they could get away with stealing it from you and get a decent chunk of change for it.

The company that I work at has a huge turnover rate. They basically chew people up and spit them out. They will stand around and talk about this person is fired, that person is fired, etc., etc, what a bad job this person is doing or that person is doing, when they don't even know how to do that person's job. And they laugh and think it is the best thing in the world to be able to steal food out of people's mouths. God forbid if someone walks in the door with credentials that they themselves don't have, then it's open season, and they will do everything to get the person out of the company -- because, hey, they have to do a preemptive strike to preserve their own valuable standing with the company. They will stand around and talk about people like they're not even there -- and even call people weak. If you confront them, though, you know they can't say a thing to your face. Now I ask you -- who's really weak?

I seriously think and know there are some criminal activities afoot on this Pirate Ship, from getting people fired to other activities that affect people's personal lives. The boss even gets involved in the bullying and likes to play games with people.

It gets scarey there sometimes. They might actually be mob-connected. Who knows? I just go to work and try to deal as best as I can. I've got bills to pay and can't just walk away. I have to stay and fight.

If I were you, I would document things you see that are not on the up-and-up. I say this because, if they ever get investigated or something, eventhough you are only a deckhand, you don't want to go down with the ship when it sinks. I would also ask yourself if all that bill paying you're doing is worth what you have to put up with to pay them.

Leave before someone goes postal! This is the one of most toxic workplaces possible...talking about people while they're standing there is a sure sign of the anger and frustration that lies beneath. Sick, sick, sick!!

Run, run like the wind! My boss and her toadies were exactly like that. The co-workers went to HR to complain about the toxic work environment she had created; the result was, we were all fired, including the HR manager who documented our complaints. At least he was able to give himself a bit of a parachute. The rest of us have better paying, less stressful jobs now, but her ship is gonna sink.
