I went into work one day only to find that I couldn't log in. After several attempts I gave up and went to talk to the Network Admin. Running down the hallway was my boss who intercepted me and took me aside into a nearby meeting room. He said that he noticed my desk was clean, that they had been giving me a hard time the last few weeks, and thought that I might be trying to f*@# them over. My desk was cleaner - just finished up a project, but all I could do is give him a look of "what are you talking about ..." He said, "well you are here and so all is good. By the way, if you receive any confusing emails from the owner's son or HR, I sent them an email already that I thought you ditched us." Later that afternoon the owner's son gave me flack about this too. I was "sending a mixed message by having my desk clean ..." and "people have left here before w/o giving notice ..." The next morning I woke up and thought about the day before, week before, and the thought of just not showing up sounded like a good idea. I lost a few books and a mouse of mine, but was well worth it. I did have good documentation and followed up with my co-workers, who also liked the idea. Wonder if they left yet.

This is a great story. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall of your bosses office the next day when you didn't show up.

Had a similar experience years ago, I asked for my paycheck early because something unexpected had come up. Next day my workbench was swept clean and the foreman was angry. Asking for an early paycheck meant you were quitting. Never heard of that interpretation again. I left soon after.
