Family emergency is always a good one. You never have to say WHAT the emergency is, and it gives you a right to be a off of work without having to fake sick or come in looking sick the next day or anything. Just call in and say "I'm really sorry, but I have an unexpected family emergency to deal with this morning." For full effect you could even say "I hope to be in later this afternoon, but I'm really not sure.". Inevitably, they ask will "Is everything alright?" and you take a deep breath and say "...yes...I think...I think it will be... Thank you...John...for your concern."
