Being in radio broadcasting is an adventure that goes beyond the thrill of on-air. One small station I worked at was owned by the strangest little anal-retentive martinet ever. One day we had a required test of the Emergency Broadcast System (it has since been replaced by an single-source automatic system you see and hear today.) When the appointed time came, I gave the required announcement and ran the test tone (that long beeeeeeeeeep!) As this happening, this manic little idiot bursts into the studio area and starts shouting "We not on the air!" I knew we were and went into the next room where a common radio receiver was set up. "Yes we are, sir" I said. He continued to rave that he couldn't. I finally turned up the volume all the way. He said later that I hurt his ears!
