Can this be real

I work for a major corporation that has been in business for over 100 years. Recently, my boss quit and one of my co-workers was promoted to her position. This person is the least qualified individual I have ever seen. She is now the National Sales Manager. She has no education, not even a high school diploma. She cannot spell or use proper grammar. She is computer illiterate, so she has no idea how to use spell check. She has a marker board and she believes it is an important part of her job to put inspirational phrases up everyday, but they make no sense and are misspelled. She repeats phrases mindlessly. The other day, she said, "Maybe he is just trying to jew you down on the price." My jaw dropped to the floor. You can't say things like that, but she doesn't know any better. It is embarassing to think she represents our company with other major corporations when trying to help open an account. Yes, they let her out in public. She will also say, "Praise Jesus, it's a miracle," and she is sincere.

"Maybe he is just trying to jew you down on the price." can be taken as derogatory.

It seems to me that 'certain' people are promoted over those more qualified. If it is a big enough orginization you may want to try to transfer.

I truly believe this is a nationwide trend whereby our managers are nothing more than yes men and women. People that have no scruples go very far regardless of education or social skills.

A year ago I had a crazy idiot for a boss. She was made the head of our QA department. She couldn't spell, was constantly off because of health problems, wouldn't think twice about yelling at anyone and made everyone uncomfortable. She didn't know how to explain anything. If you asked her a question and she didn't know the answer she would scream. When she was a regular manager and they wanted to get rid of a minority member they put that person in her group. No counseling no coaching, just firing. She is a minority member who was willing to fire other minority members.

WS - I have to agree with your statement that the bosses are getting worse. It appears that the trend is reverting back to the old management style rather than progressing into the 21st century ... at least here in the States! As I would say "It's not what you know - it's who you blow."

There is no true leadership in the US. Take a look at our own government! The current administration is filled with 'yes' men and women. A TRUE leader would not do that. A TRUE leader would suround him/herself with people who would question and challenge the leader's thoughts and actions - to gain a more clear path and thought.

I feel that many of us are in the same position where many managers and co-workers are out to gain what they cn for themselves and %#&# everyone else! I know that the managment and supervisors in my orginization are like that and many co-workers - will stab you in the back every chance they get!

Where I am at now (because I am injured on the job and am on light-duty) is not like that as much. There are a couple of co-workers who are battling it out but I stay out of that! But this is also the LOWEST position that they could put me in! This is in despite that I have an advanced degree in Information Security! But rather than place me where I am qualified and yet be on light-duty they would rather place someone that doesn't have the education or knowledge in that place who would not challenge or question them on what they are doing wrong! And believe me - our Security Group is doing a lot of things wrong! And to think that they are responsible for keep our network safe! Yea, right!

So in the end they ALL want 'yes-men/women!' It is much easier when your staff strokes you ego and tells you how great you are. But even then some of them turn and stab their boss in the back as well!

I do agree wholeheartedly and have for a long time that Bosses are "yes' men/women as CK states.

But now I have a new Boss. And he has proven in a few ways that he wants feedback and has chosen to gain it not from his Assistant Principals and Dept. Chairs only--but from us--the teachers. And furthermore, has chosen to gain the info anonymously.

2 things he has already done:
1. We have a weekly meeting and every teacher attends on their prep period (they have to have the meetings 3 times to accomodate all the teachers' various schedules. At the meeting last week we were asked to fill-out a questionnaire. The Boss introduced everything but then left--leaving us to fill-out the questionnaire anonymously with no bosses in the room. When I turned-in mine, it was not only to a colleague, but they put it in the middle of the pile.

Second, yesterday we had an Institute/Staff Development Day. Part of it we had to say positive things about the school. The people writing our comments down were doing it on a piece of large post-it paper on the wall and they were an outside source--they didn't know any of us--we didn't know any of them.

I am still suspicious because my work life has always bred suspicion and distrust toward Administration.

But I do think that there may be some sincerity. My Boss attended the school I work at as a kid from the ghetto, taught there as a teacher and a coach and is now the Principal.

Additionally, he has really "cleaned-out" the school in terms of kids who do nothing but start trouble. He has gotten rid of at least 22 bad kids 2 weeks ago, and I have been "signing-out" kids (kids leaving school) left and right for the past few weeks.

I am hoping that he doesn't turn-into a typical Boss. But things are better.

Cat - sounds like something of doing a 360 evaluation to me. That is good only if there is change. It also sounds like with him getting rid of the 22 bad kids he is striving to make a better learning environment for everyone. I wish you well on this new boss - it sounds like he is on his way to turning things around! Keep us posted!

Don't correct her. Let her hang herself. Using phrases like this she is going to p.$$ off a major client and he won't hold back.
