Future Workers Of America...

The referenced article is a few years old but is still timely.  I believe it may have been posted here before and I apologize if I have reposted it.

The reason I thought of the article is a rather funny situation that happened to me last week.   As stated, I was in training all week and one night I decided to visit a gym near the place I was staying at during training.

I went into the free weight room where I found a bunch of Generation Y'ers attempting to bench press weights which appeared to weigh as much as a small economy car.

One person slammed his weights down and went over to a friend of his and yelled "Look at my arms!  I spent four hours yesterday shredding them on the bench press!!"

For some reason this amused me and sent my vivid imagination off on a free fall for several hours.

I could not help wonder what this person did that allowed him to "shred his arms" for four hours
and what type of job did he think he would hold in the future?

I can just see this large young man shoved into a suit (lets call him Zane),  his boss comes in
yelling for him.

Boss: ZANE!  ZANE!  I have a job for you!

Zane (leaping up to attention): YES SIR!

Boss:  Ok, this is going to be difficult...I need you to..

Zane:  Yes?

Boss:  I need you to BENCH PRESS THAT COPIER 10 TIMES AND SHRED YOUR ARMS!!!!

Zane:  I've been training for this my entire life boss!

Later that night I noticed some other Generation Y'ers that had large baggy pants, gold chains, and even gold teeth!  I was informed that the gold teeth are called 'crunk teeth' and are removable.

Anyway, my imagination went into overdrive imagining how these young men would fit into corporate america as Managers...

I imagine they would walk into work wearing nice blue suits with huge oversize pants that have the waistband around their knees.   They would have to hold up their pants up with one hand while holding a briefcase in the other.

Office Administrator:  Oh sir...sir!

Gen Y Manager:  Yo!  What you need?

Office Administrator:  Your 1:00 meeting is in conference room A and I just got word from your mechanic that your 30 inch rims on your new company car have been installed!

Gen Y Manager:  Thank You!   Are my new crunks in from the dentist?

Now I don't mean to insult anyone reading this post, I actually find it interesting
that the upcoming generation is not motivated by money and that is not a bad thing.
It will be interesting to see if corporate America is going to be able to accomodate this upcoming workforce or will the upcoming workforce have to change to suit corporate America?

Addendum - Ha!   Someone emailed me suggesting that the next generation of workers
will be telecommuting from their parents basement!

This is an interesting topic I keep seeing popping up. Companies need to change to accommodate whatever the emerging workforce is looking for... Years ago when I entered the workforce from college, my company disbanded a corporate rule stating all employees must wear suits to work. Why after 40 years did they do it? Because the younger work force coming out of college had no interest in coming to work in a suite and tie when other companies where allowing shorts and t-shirts. They changed to remain competitive in the eyes of the new crop of workers. As the rules change again, if the companies want the new hires, they will change with them.

Years ago when I worked at a school district as an IT Tech I had my 'office' in the basement of the District Office. Since I am male, the dress code was suit and tie. Over the summer I had to install PC's in 20 classrooms including running the cabling. The problem was the schools cut off the AC to save money. So, I naturally wore shorts and a t-shirt as it was SWELTERING. One day I had to go to my office to get some tools and the Superintendant had a fit that I was not dressed in a suit..never mind that I was working at the school! So, from there on I would first go to work in the morning IN MY SUIT and get everything I thought I would need and then go to the school and change clothes. If I had to return to the office I would change clothes...again. I agree with you, if companies want new hires they will have to make changes to attract them as people are getting to the point where they are not motivated by money.

I don't think most of the new generation is motivated by money. I am around quite a few people in college or just entering college and they seem to be pretty realistic about what they can expect and what will be expected of them. But I do see plenty of what you describe. But then again every young generation gets critiqued with an eye of "When I was your age...!".

BTW the removable diamond teeth inserts are called "grills".

Ohh, I hated your post, your example of gen y just sounds plain ignorant and reminds me of the stereotypes used toward african americans

Teshia - Sorry if my post offended you, my posts are simply meant to entertain. However, did I say one thing about african americans that are not mentioned or implied in song, Videos or certain magazines? One of the mfg plants I frequent has a large african american workforce consisting of young men. I have seen these young men walking down the hall HOLDING THEIR BAGGY PANTS UP so they wouldn't fall. Now, don't think for a minute this bothers me due to some hidden prejudice. I simply see baggy pants, gold teeth, and big wheels on cars as a fad. Sure, I find it humorous but I am sure some of the things I do (and have done) that I think are 'hip' or cool would be just as humorous to someone else. Heck, just the other day I was cleaning some closets and found my old 'Miami Vice' suits from the 1980's!

Have a good day!
