Do I hear 60? No..? Then how about 54?

This happened to a friend of mine recently.

She got a new job and gave her two week notice to her boss. She had been there 8 years, had a key role in the company and was going to leave a big hole in her department. So a week went by since her notice and her boss finally called her in to tell her that they really didn't want to lose her and that they would like to give her a counter offer. The boss told her that he had been authorized to go up to a certain amount and then asked what it would take for her to stay. She gave them the dollar amount and her boss proceeded to tell her that the amount he was authorized to go up to was $3000 under what she asked for. So she turned it down. Her boss reiterated to her that she was important to them and told her not to worry and to "sit tight" and that he would go back to HR or whoever and find out if he could match the amount she wanted. So a day goes by and finally he calls her in again and says he has an official final counter offer for her. This time, she couldn't believe her ears when she heard the counter offer come in at $6000 UNDER what she wanted...$3000 UNDER the FIRST offer! The offer went down...??? HUH? Isn't that supposed to work the other way around?? What is wrong with these companies that suposedly "value" their people...Well needless to say, she kind of chuckled and said "I don't think so". She starts her new job on Monday and is getting exactly what she deserves! Woo hoo!
