The work never ends...

I don't understand the corporate work attitude most folks have in today's world. Everyone (except us on this site =) wants to work work work and make their bosses happy and make their companies rich all while sacrificing their own lives.

Take my job for example. There is always work to do. There is always a project going on. When one stops, another starts. They usually overlap. But people always seem to frown upon you when you finally get up the courage to take some time off and go on vacation. You get all the comments like "Must be nice to just abandon the project and take off for a week". They usually even expect you to be "available" while you are on vacation just in case they need you. Since when does corporate america own us and our free time?

I just brush them off. In fact, I make a point to say how much work they will probably be doing in my absense to make up for my not being there and how I will be lying on a beach with a margarita. I say it jokingly of course, but I mean it. I also make a point to say I will not be reachable or near any computers, so don't try to find me. Some say I'm not a team player. I tell them I am a team player, I'm just on another team. My family's team.

You are my kind of person...but you are NOT the coprporate clone that companies are looking for. Times are tough, and companies have responded by (sadly) taking advantage of their workers. AND there are plenty of people who are more than willing to be taken advantage of. It is so good to hear from people who still have a sense of what is really important. Congratulations to you, your priorities are in order.
