You get what you pay for

I've been working as a contractor for a really really big computer company (which recently announced several THOUSAND impending layoffs). I've been there for about 5 years. In the beginning, there was a chance of my being hired on as a full time regular employee. About 3 years ago, when I realized that wasn't going to happen, and they started cutting my pay by 5% every six months, I started to get pissed off. I'm there to do the same work that the "real" people do, but I earn about 1/3 of what they do. Since then, I've begun to care less and less about the quality of my work. In fact, in the past month, I've probably put in a grand total of 10 hours of actual work. And it hasn't been very good work either.

I kept saying, "I don't care about my job," but until about a year ago, there was always a nagging part of me that wanted to do a good job. It took a long time, but at last Corporate America has completely crushed my spirit. And in exchange for destroying my work ethic and sucking out my soul, they've got exactly the quality of employee they deserve.
