Drama queen

I just have to comment on this coworker. This person has always had to be the center of attention and if by some chance she was not, the drama would start. I have had to endure this person when she was a graduate student, she is now god forbid a postdoc. I had to listen to endless stories of her drama. She is anorexic, sick, her boyfriend takes advantage of her, etc. If she gets a cold or a paper cut, we have better observe a moment of panic followed by a moment of silence for all of our collective grief. Well this person has started her new postdoc and everyone should walk on eggshells around her because she is under tremendous pressure. Oh my we can not say,"Good Morning" on the off chance that she is having an issue, calling her husband on the phone crying. Get over it! Didn't your parents tell you that acting crazy and bawling over every little thing makes you a drama queen. My parents told me that life was not going to be easy or fair, but that I should suck it up and keep going. I am so sick and tired of this behavior. Yes, it is okay to have a bad day, and shit happens, but I do not spread my dirty laundry around so that other people should have pay attention to it. I hope that her behavior will improve as she gradually gets a little bit more mature and is able to handle situations with a little bit more grace.

It needs to be pointed out that her academic and personal lives are both put into disrepute by this behavior. On a professional basis, I would not make any qualifications about how she is acting ("we all have a bad day", etc.) She stops listening the moment you say "we all". Like any other bully, she is using your sense of empathy and fair play to manipulate. You deserve and drama and bully free atmosphere. By making all around her pay attention, she is robbing you of energy you need to advance your own careers and take care of your own needs. Someone with her education should know when and how to seek help for herself!
