My 24 year old daughter works at a major pet store. She has been employed ther for almost 2 years. Up untill 2 weeks ago she was her managers shining light. She is one of the fastest rising people in her area having already been promoted 3 times. She went in on her days off if needed,worked crazy shifts,and gave 110%. Around 3 weeks ago she was told she was going to get another promotion and that it ment transfering to another store.She had no problem with that and spent a few days working at the new store to see how she meshed with the other employees. Things went well and they offerd her the new position which she accepted. During the last few months they have been bouncing her back and forth from day/evening/overnight/shifts,and even though she was having problems working the overnights because she had trouble sleeping during the day,she did the shifts without complaint,but became over tired and run down. One night she backed a machine into a delivery door and broke it.She reported the incident immediatley and there appeared to be no repercussions from the event. Then a few nights later while emptying large bags of dog food from a pallet she injured her back.Since she was the only manager on she continued to work.She did report the incident but continued working several more days.When she called there medical line she was given basic information and told if it didn't resolve itself in a few days to call back.They never told her to stop working.So she continued to go to work, over tired and in discomfort from her back. Two days ago she was called into the managers office,the same one that before couldn't say enough good things about her, and was told her performance over the last 2 weeks was not up to her usual standards, and that if she didn't resolve whatever was going on she was going to fire her.My daughter is devistated. She can not understand what happend. the manager told her she thought my daughter was depressed because some days she was destracted and crying in work. My daughter tried to explain that her back still was hurting,and that she hadn't been sleeping well due to the overnight shifts,but this was discounted. I don't understand how someone can do a great job and be constantly permoted for 2 years,and then be threatend with being fired for having 2 not great weeks. I do not work in a corp. environment so maybe someone who does could explain whats going on. thanks

first of all your daughter should go to a doctor immediately and have her back checked. She needs to tell the doctor that she was injured at work. Also, were there any witnesses to the on the job injury? Your daughter needs to sit down and write down (document) everything that has happened since they started bouncing around her work hours. It's possible that they are afraid she will file a workmen's claim on her injury. She is entitled to file a workmen's comp claim if she was injured at work. Also, having a daughter not much older than yours, I know that they sometimes have difficulty confronting their supervisors and are afraid to speak up. She needs to explain to them that the erratic work schedule is causing her stress, lack of sleep and that she would like to be put on a regular work schedule that she can aclimate to. J

Right on Jujubee! - Listen to this person: Call an attorney and ASK FOR A HALF HOUR'S ADVICE i.e. some of them will talk to you before you have to hire them, as a courtesy. Document all. (Keep a running day to day file in your computer and type down every detail, name, date, etc. cause you never know what's important.) File for Worker's Comp. even if you are going back date-wise. (Call your state Worker's Comp office if you have questions about this.) This is your right and if they back-talk you and demand "why you didn't fill these forms out right away?", etc., ignore the pressure as best you can. (Also remember that back pain ESCALATES over time if not treated and this is an excellent response to that question.) They are probably putting emotional pressure on you so that you will quit. Do not quit! If you have to, get fired! - They may be avoiding this, which is commonplace, 'cause the dirty corporate dogs hate paying unemployment. - And yes, your daughter needs to get to a doctor, regardless. I am in the same situation, and believe me, especially with back injuries, these situations can become chronic and lifelong and may limit your job capacities for good. - I don't mean to sound "negative" but you need to take action. Keep "ventilating" but do more than that. - Remember: "You either have reasons, or results." Best of luck, Victoria
