No Job Security Here

In my few years at Dow Chemical, I went from good vibes to a sense of impending doom. Product lines were spun off and people were being shown the door by the score. Someone told me that it was once the case that once you came to Dow, you were there until retirement, but now--every six months you had to worry about your job. Anyone approaching age 50 or showing a little gray (with the possible exception of management) might be given six months to find another job. Contractors--being second class citizens--were simply shown the door, suddenly and without warning.
How do they learn of one's age? Through office snitches/agent provocatuers and the time-honored office birthday party. People who avoid talking to you any other time of year would suddenly try to peg you on your age with questions about parent's ages and wedding date. They may even be so bold as to ask you your age outrightly, or for exact date of birth.
Don't believe that crap about no workplace age discrimination and tell them you'd prefer not to say. I was asked what year my birth day was and I said "every year." My interrogator became upset.
