I posted a story a couple days ago "How do I quit my job to make myself happy?". I have something else to bring up. I really do not want to be anybody's slave anymore. I'm sick of being dragged around, and jerked around. I was thinking about working for myself, starting something of my own. Are there any legitimate ways of doing this out there? I have read about some "opportunities" and these are actually scams. I want to enjoy what I do, and make some money, not exactly big money, just enough to live comfortably. Anyone have any ideas?

You can make money from home, in a legitimate business. Once you determine your area of interest, start with registering your business name through the appropreate local government agency. Then create an office area in your home dedicated to your business, so you can legitimately deduct a portion of your home costs on your income tax. This is important-You must really be providing a service or product. Be sure to research this-don't just fall for the "stay-at-home" schemes, but it can be done.

Actually wasnt even thinking about those work at home scam things. I actually hate those things. I look around my neighborhood a lot and notice a lot of people have dogs. I love animals, especially dogs. I was thinking about making some advertisements for dog walking and posting them around the neighborhood. I know a lot of people are really busy with work and kids and such, and it might be a bit of relief to know that Fido wont have a "surpise" waiting on their carpet when they get home. Plus, they know their pet is getting exercise and attention, cause people treat their pets as members of the family. Just not sure how to go about starting up this little venture of mine. Think I would make about as much as I do at the local supermarket, if not more.

What a huge step for you! You are really making strides over the last week since you posted! You are taking charge of yourself ad of your happiness and that is just awesome! I think the dog walking idea is a good one. I know someone else who was contemplating it, but she never got up the courage. She's an animal lover and it would been so good for her. I wish she would have taken the plunge. I think working part time and supplementing your income with the dog walking would be great, and who know where it would lead? It could become a full time or maybe you could even open a doggy day care. I see those are getting popular. My only advice would be to take it slow and give yourself some slack. Don't forget why you quit in the first place and put effort in your marriage. Don't make your husband second to any new ventures. New start ups take a lot of work and energy so remember to pace yourself and don't get too caught up too fast. In-between times like these don't come along too often so make sure to stop and smell the roses on your journey. =) Keep us posted. I can't wait to see what you decide!

Yeah I plan on taking it slow... also I am going to start this, then he may join me if it takes off. That way, we can spend more time together. We are both animal lovers, so it would be great. And it costs virtually nothing to start up. All you gotta do is buy one of those special leashes, some treats, some toys to play with at the park, and some poopie bags. For under 100, could have a pretty good start. Working on flyers on my computer. :) Got a pic of my little "baby" on the front cover of my brochure.

Definitely take it slow, and start small. It'll take a while to build up your business, but don't be daunted by the time it takes. My husband is self-employed, and it's taken him a while to build up his business clientelle to a point where he doesn't need to work for a company anymore. So, you'll have to "wean" yourself off the corporate support, so to speak. It took my husband about five or six years, but he's very good at his job and his clients think he's fantastic. It can work for you too! Gambatte yo! (Do your best!/Good luck!)

Don't fall for those "work from home schemes" you see on tv or billboards. They are all scams. However, there are a few legit professions that you can work from home. I know of a lady who makes a decent living taking Doctors dictations from portable tape recorders and typing them into word documents. She has a few clients who have been with her for years and she does ok.

My advice if you decide to start your own business... find something you are passionate about. Starting a business is definitely not easy, but if you are doing something you love, it helps make the work more than just work. I also agree with SouthernProgrammer regarding many of those advertised work from home scams. If it sounds too good to be true, it is. Perhaps try monster.com for telecommute opportunities, or even craigslist.com.
