Not to mention when the mgmt. goes out of their way to say what a "family" they are, how everyone jokes around, and that this is a "team" atmosphere; funny, I didn't see any of that when I was there...I figure if they make a big deal about that, it's an ideal, not a reality. (Personal experience here)

This is all very nice, if you get a tour of the facility (big if) and if you interview with the hiring manager. Being sent to HR to talk to the receptionist at the door followed by the HR lady isn't going to tell you anything, and you can't ask the kinds of "company environment" questions in a screening interview that you can in a more direct one.

Good question, and would it be considered "stalking" if the jobseeker lingers at the elevator or stays in the parking lot to check facial expressions, body language as the employees file in or out?

Usually after an interview, they will ask if you have any questions. At this point you may want to ask what their interview process is. Is it a multi-step process where candidates will be selected to come back for follow up interview, if so, this may not be the time or appropriate person to ask about the environment you would be working in. They may have already explained their environment during the course of the interview and you may be able to gauge how much you should inquire if you did not get the information you wanted. Either way, you can have the greatest job in the world, but if the environment is not compatable with you, you will be unhappy.

I went to a job interview at a HUGE local mortgage company (the owner is constantly on TV, looking like the boy next door, so earnest and helpful.) First, I had to take an I.Q. test (I swear!) then a "pychological evaluation", (YES, like a "RORSCHACH" test), then the tour of the office. At that point, unhappy worker bees were moving quickly, in a rushed and hyperactive way. As I passed by them, a few muttered to me "You don't want to work here", or caught my eye and shook their heads quickly. It was actually surreal, and I was SO glad I was not called back for a second interview. Maybe the "psychological exam" revealed that I have an independent thought once in awhile.

Hey thanks. I thought this was really helpful. I should have done this at my current job. There are so many things that would have been a dead giveaway. I will forward on to my friends.

Great article good tips.---- However there is another even more abusive employer who forces you to smile no matter how lousy and hurtful the treatment. You are supposed to act bouncy and "outgoing" and chat about unimportant subject only or listen to the inane chatter of others and not and smile. This could easily fool an even careful observer.
