Summer's Here: Time to Play Hookie

Hey JobSchmobbers!  Long time no write!

If you're like me, sometimes time gets away from you and before you know it, it's been MONTHS since you've written anything and a trip to JobSchmob has been long overdue.  So sorry I've been MIA lately, but I've never stopped thinking about the JobSchmobbers.  Since I'm not really in work mode these days and my mind seems to drift elsewhere more often than not on these summer days, I thought I'd set about writing down some good summer work ditch ideas. And since it's 2008, gas prices are outrageous and the economy blows, I've come up with some cheap weekday ditch plans to get the heck out of the working life and recharge your soul.

I'll leave the typical "beach", "picnic" and "muesum" ones off the menu because hopefully you're getting some of those in there on the weekends.

Enjoy!

12 Simple and Satisfying Summertime Work Ditch Plans:

  1.  See a matinee movie: Discounted price, air conditioning, and the knowledge that everyone else you work with is back in the office....ahhhhh!

  2.  Get a Slurpee, a bag of bread and go feed the ducks somewhere:  You know it's not hard to find a pond with ducks, especially if you live in Suburbia.

  3. Go for a bike ride on a route you've never taken before.

  4. Walk the trails at a state park.

  5. Go to the local park around 4ish and watch a little league game.

  6. Got kids? Help them set up a lemonade stand.

  7. Feel like doing some good?  Weed an elderly neighbor's garden.

  8. Visit a local nature center.

  9. Buy a harmonica and spend the day learning to play it.

  10. Buy a model airplane kit and spend the day constructing it.

  11. Get a cheesy paint by numbers kit and make a masterpiece.

  12. Set up a hammock and just lay there in the shade: Again knowing your coworkers are sitting in cubicles under fluorescent lighting.

I plan to do numbers 2 and 12 tomorrow!  It's Friday and it's going to be 91 degrees outside.  I will toast my Slurpee to you guys!  Next week, it's going to be the paint by numbers!

I like #2, a sandwich place near my house has started selling ICEE's and I have been getting the PEPSI one lately.

I also like to go to a local pool with the kids in the afternoon (After 5:30) when it is all but deserted. The pool has a lot of tree's around it which means it is well shaded. Nothing better than just floating around in the water as the sun lowers and the underground lights are turned on. We eat supper there sometimes...

SP--I love my local pool--3 blocks away. A family pool pass is $90 for the season. They re-did our pool a few years ago and they have everything! Waterslides, kiddie place, general pool for all and best of all--2 lap lanes reserved for lap swimmers age 18 and over for the entire day and eve! Do a few laps and see how one's body improves! (I do the sidestroke and backstroke and my body is really shaping-up! This with a 4 mile run every morning--I'm feeling good!) Our community is home of the No-Gloves National Softball Tournament--4 days of exciting ball! The Park District also has many other free family events and there is always music and concessions:) It pays to read the local paper.

Wow CB, that sounds like a great setup. Our local pool doesn't have all that but it is a decent sized pool that is usually not crowded yet busy up until the late afternoon. The neat thing is there is a 'shaved ice' place nearby that sells wonderfully large shaved ices in all flavors (my favorite is Bannana) for $1.50 and two great local Pizza places that will deliver.

Or you can do what I did and walk out. And spend the whole summer trying to find another job. But I had no choice. Way to many hours with no Overtime pay and no life. Plus the stress was killing me. I sort of regret it but not really as I am still alive and have actually got to do somethings other than work this summer. But now its back to serious job hunting.

best of luck to a courageous kelly!

it's brutal to look for a job in the summer where i live. always have to look for a new job in july and get fried in parking lots.
