New year - New outlook

Considering that I know that I will never advance where at am at dispite my education and knowledge and that without the needed experience I am planning methods to GET me the experience that I need!

I have been considering tackling this issue on two fronts - joining a volunteer organization (for getting my experience) and joining ToastMasters (for gaining connections and building confidence). It's not that I lack confidence in speaking in front of groups. My MBA program had me giving presentations every 4 to 8 weeks! But I want to build upon that confidence.

As to the volunteer - I am still reseaching where to go and what to do. There I may have two areas - computer networking/information security or management. I had e-mailed one organization about a month ago and just now hearing from them. My e-mail slipped through their crack. I intend to call them and see what they offer. In the mean time I will reseach and contact other organization and see what they offer.

Granted that this will be non-paying positions, it will be the means to an end. It would expose me to the experience that is required for many jobs that I have been applying for as well as increasing my exposure and making personal connections whick may lead to another job.

If my current employer is thinking that they can hold me back and ruin any type of future that I may have elsewhere then they REALLY don't know me!

Another book was recommended - "Getting Your Foot in the Door When You Don't Have a Leg To Stand On" (McGraw-Hill). I have it on order from the public library.

As to some additional research, you may want to check out "Ferguson's Career Guidance Center" through your local library system.

THIS is MY New Year resolution!!! - CK

Great ideas! I never thought about volunteering to gain job experience, but that is a very good idea for folks having trouble getting out of their current situation.

Volunteering is an awesome thing to have on a resume!!!! It's a great idea. Also, look for internships, sometimes they pay a salary. People that volunteer stand out to an employer because they are dedicated enough to donate their time and energy to something they truly are devoted to. Absolutely, don't let anybody derail your plans. You have the education...that is half the battle and puts you in the race!
