I was fired for WHAT?

I have worked for a HUGE Financial company for the past 11 years! I learned a lot, but bottom line, I never made my own decisions there.

This is a company that claims to have a great work/life balance, supposedly very family oriented. That's bullshit inb my opinion, considering one of the reasons for my termination was that I was not able to put in enough overtime this past January to make a difference (in the boss's opinion). Jeesh, sorry for being a single mom...I could only feasibly work 5-7 ours of overtime in a given week, based on when I didn't have my son. DISCRIMINATION? Hmmmmm...

Oh and get this, because I decided to ask the boss a clarifying question to be sure when a particular deadline was, well that was another reason for letting me go. Apparently this was bad communication. Kind of funny since my job on a daily basis entailed communication of all sorts.

Another thing that was marked against me was that when I travelled to another site, I wore jeans on the airplane, and I was going to change when I arrived. I guess my decision making is way off base....since I arrived later than expected, I decided to get right to work so that I could be ready to go the next morning. So, what's more important? Getting the work done, or wearing a non-denim pair of pants? Again, WHAT was I fired for? After 11 years, I didn't even receive a severance. WOW, a real stand up company looking out for their people.

RedSox one thing stands out for me in your blog. Your boss basically started condemning your performance, etc.. because you could no longer do the same amount of overtime prior to having your son right? And you were there 11 years? Hmmmm is right! Take a look at this website http://www.womensrightsny.com/ This is the site to my attorney's lawfirm who specifically deal with cases such as yours. They represent women in 3 States hopefully you are in one of those States. Even if you are not I would still buzz them.

Thanksso much for the recommendation. I live in NH, so Im not sure if this is one of the 3 states.

This is why I can't stand it when folks tell me (as a entrepreneur) that I have no job security... NO ONE has job security ... especially in corporate america.

Sorry to hear you lost your job... keep your head up and something new will come along!

Red Sox, I live in NH as well. Some employers take advantage of the "at will" laws that allow them to let workers go for little or no reason. At the same time, they are responsible to follow other employment laws like equal opportunity, discrimination, and sex harassment laws to name but a few.
This is not the first time that an employer has tried to pull a fast one. Get your documentation together and let 'em have it!!

Twiz is so right. No way you will find job security working in a cubicle farm. Take this opportunity to either start your own business or get a job at a smaller company that is less likely to treat you as an easily replaceable number.

Good Luck

Not sure if they cover N.H. but at least considering this law firm is a fighter for women's rights they will certainly lead you to the right attorney to take on your case. Do not let them get away with what they did to you. I cannot express how bad I feel for you. I too am a single mother of a toddler.

Dear RedSox (from home of White Sox)--I work in a huge company (Chicago Public Schools) and teaching is the most not family-oriented profession--you don't work 8-3--at least not in this shit hole--and you spend tons--tons of time doing other stuff to keep your job--like a professor having to publish to keep theirs or be tenured or fired. And we work all kinds of crap for free--our boss "asks" us every May to work from 7:25 am. until 9:00 p.m. for two days a week on Thurs. and Fri. so kids can have their "ethnic festival." Why aren't parents doing this? And chaperoning dances, and sports events, and movie nights and prom,etc....and coaching and clubs, etc....And if you pick up a professional development gig it pays $8 bucks an hour for like 2-4 hours but it costs at least--at least --$20 to park downtown. Horseshit. "Family _oriented" jobs--I think that if they advertise or pride themselves this way it is a huge, huge, huge red flag!!!! Get out!!!

Twiz--I am soon to be an entrepeneur and I would rather chance my"job security" on myself than a company. There is no such thing as job security anymore--if you have a job with benefits you end up one way or another paying for them whether you use them or not. And if you pay for upgraded benefits you still are writing out a huge check everytime you take your kid to the dentist for a cleaning or cavity. And I have to take antibiotics 1 hour prior to anything dental because I have a heart murmur and it is cheaper to pay out of pocket than my insurance--out of pocket is $4.-insurance is $20.-- bullshit.

Bigblue - I'm with you on that one. I have much more faith in myself than any company that can lay me off at the drop of a hat without warning... At least with my own business I can see it coming if earnings are starting slip, I can prepare for it. In a company, they usually save the "good news" for the last minute... I'm not totally on my own yet... but I am close. Every time I talk about the subject with others it I always get the same response... What are you going to do about health care? Don't you want a regular paycheck? Society somehow has built up this fear of working for yourself... which makes it very hard for many folks to even envision doing something else... which plays right into the corporate game.
