Is the devil running our office? Written by wageslave on 01/28/2012My office is chaotic. I am at the bottom of the food chain because I answer customer calls. The head office decided to make our jobs easier by adding unnecessary programs. These processes jam up our computers and delay the calls while we wait for our computers or have to reboot entirely. Meanwhile middle managers complain that the calls are taking too long and customers can't get through. Is this the work of the devil? Why would some stuffed shirt even ask for trouble by adding inadequate software? Why wouldn't they ask for input by people that actually work?Read 2 Replies   |   Add a Reply

Because it's so much easier to blame problems on the employee, not the clodgy software, not the broken equipment, nor the incompetent lazy bosses who really have no idea how to do any job that requires actual work. Everyone in upper management knows in their heart of hearts that equipment NEVER breaks, programs ALWAYS work and Bosses are ALWAYS right. If my Boss said the sun rose in the West, you can be darned sure she's right ! Log every program fault (make a checklist that just lets you check a box and scribble the time it occurred) as it happens and send the info, once you have enough, to EVERY middle manager you can send it to - anonymously. We have a program that crashes and that checklist, showing the errors and when they happen, made the boss go away instead of yelling at me that the work wasn't getting done. Apologise at the end of the document for the poor performance of the programs - adding that if they were removed, productivity would rise. I'd say something like, "I realise that great expectations of work production were placed contingent on the addition of programs x, y and z, I am sorry to report that their addition causes system slowdown and crashes and respectfully submit that it may be best if they were deleted." Expect, though, if the Big Boss made this decision to add them, you're stuck with them.

Labtech, Thanks for the suggestions. I will try to log the problems. Now we are having phone problems too. Everyone calling in sound like they are floating over Niagara Falls in a barrel. If I ran my household the way they run this office I would be out on the street.
