I've often felt like calling the old owner of the Radio Station from Hell and asking how much money he made off his affair with the Sleazy Secretary. After all, she enjoyed his protection no matter what for many years. And please don't tell me it's all about the sex...she wasn't THAT good-looking and quite frankly there were other women around he could have hooked up with.
The real answer lies in his desire to control, misinform, and spy on the people he himself had hired.
It's an interesting process. You apply for a job you think you'd like. The person hiring you is presumably pleasant and encouraging of your application during the interview, and then hires. Then, however, the process of degrading you and placing you in their thrall begins almost immediately. Since the owner could be sued or personally attacked, he brings in a toad general manager that enforces his will. Then uses his office whore to keep and eye on the GM and the targeted workers.
In some cases, I can say the company hired people they knew would be eventually fired.
Even the office affair itself is more about power and position than passion. Imagine being able to deride those around you with little or no immediate consequences. Of course, once the persecuted employees leave, any number will launch remote control attacks designed to expose the nature of what happened.
One day the bewildered owner wondered out loud who was "making these rumors up anyway". Hmmm...maybe it's one of the two dozen people who have left here in the past months....
Whether it's antisocial behavior disorder like narcissism or the person is simply a bully, it can never shown that a real profit for the business has been secured. The only factor on the uptick is the misery index for all involved.

Well, it WAS his money. He was a real estate attorney and hadn't a notion as how to motivate people and increase profits. Eventually, the station caved in on itself and the broadcast group I went to work for. The operation was just a shell of what it had been just five years earlier...

What I meant to say was the group I went to work for took over the station. It was really shocking to see trash, dust, and even old Christmas decorations left up for years around the office. The culture he created was one of "I look after myself, no one tells me what to do".
Bizarre!!

so confessor - he ran the radio station as his hobby with his own money or did he get a business loan and left the bank holding the bag. i suppose he did not have to set up an escrow account to cover wages either. talk about a power trip of sick need to control. in the future lenders should ask for a psychological profile, and we should too before some little office tyrants ruin our lives. i have a personal list of people i will not work for or sell to. this list works for me and lawyers are high on that list.
now look at the bright side you gained experience with some bruising, fell on your feet - and sweet revenge - saw your next employer take over. what more can you ask for?
my last bad experience was also 12 years ago. physically, financially, psychologically i was not quite so lucky, but i decided not to give them the satisfaction to think about them any longer.

Good for you! This prick tried to blackball me to other employers (no good- they already knew about his prick reputation) and so on. I really do believe he's mentally ill, and I'm not the first to say this. When a departing employee indicated that he wanted to repeatedly hit him in the head, his response was that "he'd go get a CAT scan". LOOOOOSERRRRR!!!!!!
