I was hired by a power tool company. For me, this was a great combo, a good job and power tools. You get to build 'em, buy 'em, use 'em and get paid for it.
The trouble began early and I should have known something was wrong when AFTER I already agreed to a salary, I was introduced to the department VP and he said "welcome aboard" and your salary for this position will be $X dollars, which was about $5K LESS than what I already agreed to. After I explained to him that I already have agreed to a salary, he sheepishly said "Oh, I was just kidding".
The real trouble with this micro-managing idiot came when it was my responsibility for the quality of the parts purchased but yet I didn't have the authority to change the sub-standard suppliers that HE chose in the first place because the low-cost that made him look good on the books.
He even had the audacity during a supplier conference to tell all the top suppliers brought in for the meeting that he wanted to see a 15% yearly reduction in parts cost. You could have heard a pin drop because everyone was stunned and thought the same thing - this guy is an idiot and will soon expect the suppliers to PAY him to take their parts.
I quit after a few months because I didn't need the ulcer this job was giving me. I felt bad about quitting, but the real satisfaction came after I got word that my supervisor quit a few months later (because of the same stuff) and of the 2 guys hired in my place; one lasted a whole 3 weeks and the other quit after 2 days!
And yet, somehow these morons manage to keep their jobs!

I guess you didn't get a formal job offer with salary in writing. I would have walked.
