Blocking audio streaming

Dude - why do companies have to block audio streaming behind their dang firewalls? All I want to do is listen to some Comcast Rhapsody while I'm working - but noooooooooo!

I used to work for a company that did that, and it was a small company. However, they weren't cheap jerks. They upgraded their server. They even got wireless internet into the works. These guys know that the better the system runs, the more production they can accomplish. Why can't other companies think this way???

I work at a facility where we have 900 users and a leased line that is supposed to be dedicated to moving cad files and data transactions. If a user listens to streaming radio it does indeed cause problems. Remember, this not your home network with DSL or CABLE and one user, this is one line with HUNDREDS of users. You would think that the solution would be simple such as "oh just buy a cable modem" but it gets more complicated than that, a company like that wants large $ because this is a business which has larger needs and MUST be up 24x7. One minute of downtime translates into 6 digit dollars values....and that does not mean 6 digits with the pennys!

I have to agree with SoutherProgrammer on this one. Think about the influx of data on the server when just one person does the Real Player/Media player thing. Imagine how slow your sytem would function if you had 30 people streaming at the same time. I hate it when I have to agree with something the "man" does. Arrrrggghhhh.

when it comes to large companies with hundreds of users, I'd have to agree. Instead, go get your favorite CDs and just play those. I used to keep tons of CDs at my desk, and it was definitely helpful, since there was no overhead radio. Besides--overhead radio is crap when you hear the same stuff every friggin' day. You can almost measure the time of the day by listening to the songs being played on the radio... Feh.

Audio Streaming eats up expensive bandwidth and can bring a router to its knees....

Oh please - this is the 21 century - bandwidth is only an issue if your a cheap company and and don't pay for big-fat truncations into the building! My poor grandma uses Rhapsody on dial-up!
