Getting Proactive

Since we all are pretty much agreed that office BS not only hurts workers, but the business as well, how about some ideas about how to get the word out? Examples include asking an interviewer about how much politics control the workplace you will be entering? Or asking your current boss (at the right moment) about how they feel about workplace bullying and what they think the average employee should do. I've done so in my current job, and unlike some previous situations, the cliques and schemers have been frustrated. It takes a constant effort. I think that stating that negative people cost the business big bucks puts you in the right spot with any decent company. Let's hear some of your imput!

You know what, confessor? You pose an excellent point. I really had not thought about approaching it head on in the interview process. I mean, I always look for the "signs" of a bad batch during an interview (interviewing them and the place as much as they are interviewing me) but I have never done it pointedly in a verbal manner. And you're right, it's about time that we, as workers, start being proactive and taking back some of the power. So that the companies will be forced to clean up the place before inviting us over. In getting to know this site, I think the point of it is to vent and then figure out what we're gonna do to fix it and to that end, I like your style.

Corporate Slave has it right! This web site is excellent inorder for you to see what happens to other people and the ways you can avoid problems. Wish my ex-boss would read this - maybe she could get something out of it!

Even if you ask though...what are the odds that they'll be straight up and tell you the whole truth? Sure, you may be able to call their bluff, but are they really going to say "Uh...good question! Well, the reason this position is vacant is because the person you'd be replacing quit due to vicious backstabbers and office dicators!" Probably not!

any HR people out there who want to weigh in on this one?

I think poking fun at those who play the corporate game might help. Maybe call them out in am meeting while making a joke about their tactic. Make references to movies like Office Space, or whatever. If it doesn't work, at least you get some entertainment out of it.
