A Simple 'Thank You' Would've Sufficed Written by Prof.Wagstaff on 02/06/2012I was leveraged into taking early retirement from my job at a large university (won't say its name, but it's acronym is often expanded to Under Contruction, Seldom Finished)after 25 years about 3 years ago. While in my position I served as a shop steward for a while and had dealings with a woman in Labor Relations. The other day, I was surprised to see several emails from this person in my inbox as well as several from somebody at the university I had never heard of. Opening the first, I quickly realized it was an internal communication from the Labor Relations person to a department manager that dealt with a possible theft issue. I have no idea why I was added to this email. There were about a dozen total emails between the two of them that had been sent to me. I emailed the Labor Relations person to inform her that I was receiving these emails and that maybe that should stop since she was sending privileged information to an unauthorized 3rd party and that that could create legal problems for everyone down the road. Rather than saying 'Thanks, sorry,' and take me off the string, she started emailing back threatening notes, first denying ever sending the emails (then why do I have them from you?), then saying she never knew me (then why do you have my personal email address?) and then accusing me of threatening her when I asked her those questions. The other person on the string, the intended recipient of the emails threatened me with legal action if I didn't 'immediately erase all documents erroneously sent to you.' I was then contacted by the Campus Police who wanted to know why I had those emails. When I explained the situation, they said 'Never mind.' I got a further email from the Labor Relations woman who basically pulled a 'LEAVE BRITTNEY ALONE!' number on me and told me to never contact her again. I was more than happy to comply with that, but I did forward the email string to the Unions, the Chancellor's Office, Labor Relations, and, the woman they were planning to finger for the alleged theft, the woman who, BTW, according to their emails, notified her department of the theft in the first place (I was able to track her down through the university directory). All they had to say was 'Sorry,' but they became bullies and harassers. Typical of what I had to deal with for over 25 years.
