I gave proper notice, but it's still not good enough Written by good girl employee on 10/24/2009I just put in my two-weeks notice after only working there a few months; it just ended up not working out, I'm not able to make a living from what I'm getting paid AND since my hours run into the evening, it's interfering with my class schedule. I thought they would appreciate my giving them two weeks, considering now days, people don't even do that much. My boss is taking it so personally, she is acting like we're a couple and I just broke up with her! it's ridiculous, like high school. She walked up to me and said that I owe them a THREE week notice, and she didn't even ask in a nice way (I probably would have been willing, but it's not very motivating when the person is scowling and demanding it). I stuck to my guns on the two weeks, and she is making comments like they did me some huge favor by giving me this low paying job and now I'm dumping them, as if only they were of value to me, but I was of no value to them. This is the most UNprofessional response I have ever experienced from an employer. They don't even care about my life, my school, or that I couldn't even pay the bills staying there--Which is why I should be so glad I'm out of there. I just had to vent. Wish me luck surviving the next two weeks with these people. Read 4 Replies   |   Add a Reply

Be glad you escaped. They should have offered you better hours or more money or both. No one gives or expects a 3 week notice. Two weeks notice is customary. Your supervisor needs to be told people won't stay with this wage and these hours. They probably have lost many workers due to these conditions and it's THEIR fault. Your post reminded me of Superior Vending a company my husband worked for. They would literally scream at their staff in the morning, tell everyone how stupid and lazy they were. They even bounced paychecks to their employees. When my husband quit the owner's wife admonished my husband and said "But we were so good to you." These winners refused to pay their taxes, lost their building and filed bankruptcy. They gave their employees no warning when they shut down and even left their guard dogs in their complex with a sign saying, "Free Dogs." Run to a new job and don't look back. If the super makes your life unbearable tell her I am leaving today.

Two weeks notice is standard. Don't feel bad for sticking to your guns. You have your reasons, just as a company has their own reason when they fire someone on the spot. It wasn't working out. You don't seem them giving folks a 3 week notice when they fire them. Don't sweat it. Be polite, respectful and leave knowing you were the better person.

You gave standard notice and that's it. You were professional about it and she wasn't. count the days and leave when the time comes.

you truly can walk into your job at 8am and quit and walk out at 8:01 - it's your right. however, two weeks notice is customary. it's the professional thing to do. and your employer should thank you for allowing them two weeks to figure out what to do with your work!
