THE MADDEN CORPORATION - THE UNALOHA PLACE

The only place I've ever worked for here in the islands where the OWNER bullies his weight around beyond anything you can fathom. The micromanaging is unbearable. No one wants to be held accountable for anything when the person who really calls the shots is THE OWNER. And when things go good, everyone wants credit. When things go bad, HE POINTS HIS FINGER. And doodoo rolls down hill. So the managers in turn treat their subordinates the same way. The faithfully loyal ones to the owner try so hard for cheese points on his goody two shoes list is sickening. Like a child betting for attention from their daddy. If you like being battered and beaten and told how stupid and incompetent you are on a regular basis, then knock yourself out and GO APPLY there.
Theres a reason why the turnover rate is so high there....No ONE deserves to be anyone elses punching bag. I don't know how these people continue to LEGALLY get away with the treatment and abuse of their employees.

From my experience, most companies would NOT clean house. Like a former supervisor told us during the last recession ... "If you don't like it, there's the door." I think that you will find that most companies now have that attitude becuase they KNOW that you can't leave because of the job market. And they take full advantage of the situation. Is it legal? Is it right? Do they care? It doesn't matter! You are at their mercy - and they know it and will take advantage of it each and every time they can!
i still win(09/10/2008)
yes, you are at their mercy because of the economy and the lack of good jobs out there. BUT, i took that risk. I believed in myself enough to know that i was WORTH more than the way they treated me. in less than a month i got a BETTER paying job for a STABLE and MUCH bigger company than them. and this company does not tolerate behavior such as those at the madden corporation.
so I win. HAHA!
CK(09/11/2008)
Good for you!!! You happen to luck out and hit the lottery jackpot!!! But the rest of us down-trodden have to get up every day to fight a loosing battle. I too know I am worth more and deserve more then what I am recieving. But the local employment environment is so poor that in most cases I would be facing a big pay cut that I cannot afford. That is another reason I am making myself open to relocation.
HR Hippie(09/12/2008)
In places like Hawaii with high unemployment, employers can get away with this behavior because they know their employee's options are limited. Sad, but true,
LaJeuneFille(09/12/2008)
everyone in this company is quick to bust someone for something - checking their cell, making quick personal calls, checking the traffic on the net - because EVERYONE IS MISERABLE and if they have to suffer with these mindless rules then EVERYONE has to suffer too.
so you can either stay on the short leash or run free with management that treat employees like human beings.
Good you left that HH!

I am sorry you are going through this. I was told by an attorney for our union that management gets brazen when there is a presidential administration that does not like unions. Think of the Reagan and Bush Economies. Were there more jobs and better treatment of workers during the Clinton years? I really do think our economy can recover if we elect a candidate with a plan.
One candidate so far has addressed taxing big corporations that export our jobs. One candidate has refused donations from big oil. Voting for this candidate is not an immediate solution to our problems but it is a start. I really believe in Obama and think we need a candidate that cares about working men and women. I hope everyone that is disgusted with this current job market remembers who ruined this country and who voted with this president's policies 90% of the time.
HaveADamnNiceDay(09/17/2008)
One thing that I think is really interesting with employment laws (at least in my state) is that if you are fired for misconduct, you can be denied unemployment benefits. However, there are no laws against misconducting yourself (bullying for the sake of bullying) against your employees. Essentially, they can bully you so long as they don' mention your race, nationality, gender, religion or orientation they are free to abuse you as they please. Why is this????
Think about it. Ms. Morbidly Obese HR director might have something against Young and Fit Support Tech Girl from the IT dept just because she doesn't have a weight problem.
Vice versa, Skinny B!tch Lady in Accounting might have something against Big Soft-Looking Intern Guy because he's overweight. Both will look for excuses to pick because they're insecure.
I guess you can't make laws against insecurity, can you? >_<
sympathetic reader(09/20/2008)
I work in an office where upper management makes middle managers target employees they don't like. This is not something I'm guessing managers and former managers have confirmed this. The result is we have desperate money hungry and unscrupulous managers.
I have been approached by different managers telling me to apply for key job openings in the middle management career path. I won't do it and most of my coworkers won't apply either.
I have seen the bias and arbitrary behavior you described.
To illustrate I had a manager I'll call "Lulu." Lulu tried to befriend me. She told me the company offered her management as a reward because she didn't sue for a slip and fall accident. She waddled into a puddle in the ladies room. For a visual of Lulu think of Mimi on the Drew Carey show without the makeup.
She would tell me about her complaints against my coworkers and discuss their absenteeism. She told me to stop helping people they wanted to fire. A direct quote was, "Hey we're trying to get rid of her. You keeping helping her she's getting the answers right and we can't fail her."
Needless to say Lulu turned on me also. She was the worst manager I ever had. I made a formal request never to be in her group again. It was one of many. I bet she ends up running the whole place one day.

I can vouch for the hellishness of the Madden Corporation workplace. I've been separated from the company for more than two years now, yet I still get bitter when I think about how I was treated in that place. A relaxed work environment produces happy and productive workers, but when it's fear and bullying that rules the day, then aloha means goodbye, to your workers.
wheaties(10/07/2008)
The best is when you go to an interview and HR tells you they've heard stories about that place. HAHAHA!! No further explanation needed. No one's bent on smearing their name. They did it all by themselves. KUDOS TMC! KUDOS!
LostMarbles(10/12/2008)
It has gotten worse over the years. I'm still employed? There is ONLY one irritating snob of a manager--and that's putting it nicely--that I just don't connect. Pansy's had numerous complaints filed against her--yet, she's still there. Obviously, the Madden's cherish her loyalty. I've had my share of run-ins with her--because I won't allow her to bully me around. So it surprises me that I'm still there.
She is a control fanatic, and thinks she runs the whole show. The sorry thing is that Dale and Lynne don't see past her manipulative ways. Oh, well, I'm sure the company won't be standing very long with the way things are. Dale continuously makes wrong decisions on the company's welfare--or so it has been said by all people--Pansy. If the Maddens only knew about how she talks about them they would be shocked. She backstabs every manager in that company but when you see her talking with them she is all sweet and nice--blah, phoney witch.
Everyone harps about Gil being a horrible manager--but Pansy out-shines him any day. Gil is a scared little man and just barks--he's not capable of biting. Sigh, so much drama in a supposedly "respectable" company.
hearhear!(10/14/2008)
Reading these comments certainly makes my day. Speaking of bad decisions, how about what happens in Hawaii line. yech.
hearhear!(10/14/2008)
I just remembered one thing. An instance of the extent this company micro-manages. This is supposed to be a 150-200 employee company yet the owner manages to micro-manage to the littlest thing. When a holiday comes, and the office is closed, the assistant to president/owner actually emails a script to follow when changing outgoing voicemail messages. Imagine. Not trusting your employees to record an out-of-office message for 1 holiday!
joy(08/25/2009)
what kind of people are the owners? wow! it sounds scary! i was thinking of applying but i have never seen reviews on a business like this before.
lostmarbles(02/15/2010)
What kind of owners are the Maddens? At one time, they were very endearing to the little people--now, you don't even see Mr. Madden around anymore. However, his son, Michael, is a sweetheart. Probably, the best of them all.
Maleka01/27/57(05/29/2010)
LostMarbles, you know Pansy pretty well at her job. But you don't know half the stuff about her. From what I hear she is still married to her husband. They been separated for almost 15 years after being married for over 20 years. And you won't believe what caused the break-up. Or maybe you will. I heard this at the company when I was working there but did not believe it. But then I heard it from someone else outside the company and all I can say is poor guy.
honeygirl93(02/01/2011)
Wow! With all the comments I'm hearing about the Madden Corp. I'm kinda scared. I'm supposed to go to an interview tomorrow at 11am with Gil Wallace & I'm not sure I want to even go. But on the other hand I'm a single parent of 4 children and haven't been able to find a job for almost a year now & am on the verge of being homeless if I don't find a job a.s.a.p. Ahhhhhh!
dontask(02/01/2011)
...
Sometimes there is only that one choice.
As long as this corporation does not damage your work history! At least you are going into the interview and possible employment with you eyes open. You can endure for your family's sake.
Any feedback here from previous employees?
Any suspicious blow back from the company during job searches?
extmcslave(02/25/2011)
maleka - DO TELL! Inquiring minds want to know.
dont ask - you are right. sometimes you have no choice but to take what's there. sucks but you gotta do what you gotta do. If you MUST work there please go in with your eyes open and your guard up.
as far as blowback, i've noticed now that when they advertise for employees they no longer list their company name on their listings (craigslist). I'm sure they've realized the true power of the internet.
I'm so glad many people who are considering taking employment with them are smart enough to google the company prior to accepting the position. Educate yourself. go in with your eyes open and your guard up. good luck to any future employees. You're gonna need it.
extmcslavetoo(03/14/2011)
TMC is not the best place to work, but you'll learn a lot because the turnover rate is high. The Maddens can't even keep their own son at TMC! No sick leave. Tardy rule sucks...1 minute late, you have to make up 15 minutes. If you're late the day before or the day after a holiday, you don't get paid for the holiday. That includes coming back from lunch! No smoking rule. I've seen them get written up for smoking during lunch, and they're not even on company property! TMC has even changed expiration dates on food! They peel off the old expiration code sticker and replace it with a new sticker with a new expiration code. Is that legal? Lots of the designs are copied from other companies. Look at the hula girl designs! Major favoritism from GW! It's fine to work there, but take the experience and run! You'll learn to CYA real fast!
been there(08/27/2011)
I also have worked for this company. In the beginning they make you feel welcomed, all smiles and goody goody attitudes, but give it about a year and it all turns around. Managements attitudes change 360 and all the other comments above are absolutely true. I was even warned before working there, but in my case I never expected I would end up there.
been there(10/03/2011)
While working at this "place" I've been written up to the point of suspension. I could not explain couple situations which I took the blame for because if you say anything you get accused of spreading negativady. After I got booted out, from what I heard Miss P. the B. screwed my reference which lessened my chance of getting another job which I had applied for. On top of that, from what I heard Mr.G told this person to next time have that employer talk to him. Yeah right. He and Miss P are all in the same boat. I don't see why and how they're still there or even how the company still exists.
glad I'm outta there(10/03/2011)
All these comments are true.Warning, when you apply and get interviewed, the key phrase which you will hear is " This company may not be right for you." Think about it and good luck!
anonymous(10/03/2011)
perhaps there is a tax incentive or other lucrative reason to hire new employees. take the job only if you have no choice and find a new job before the year is up. employers who deliberately spoil work histories are vicious low lives.
never ever take the blame for anything, it always comes back to haunt you. it's like a false confession and can get you hung.
haha(10/17/2011)
im assuming they are having a hard time finding people to fill positions. when they advertise for people they dont list that they are tmc or their website anymore. they leave everything as anonymous as possible but you can tell because they always mention that they are a drug free non smoking company. and why do they keep saying they are in waikele. they're NOT. they are in the heart of WAIPAHU. geez.
current employee(11/01/2011)
Above Comments are VERY TRUE... this place is horriable to work at. the VPs are horriable to work for and they treat employess like s##..
Word of advise take the training and RUN!!!!
I'm back(11/19/2011)
Just ran into a co-worker and that person had nothing nice to say about TMC. Favoritism is a priority. The raises and bonuses goes to the ones they like. The employees only stay there because they have no where else to go even if they're suffering with the way they are being treated. The so called meetings every end of the month is rediculous and just a waste of time. Mr. G.W. is always playing peek a boo from his office like a little kid just waiting for you to make a wrong move. He should've been a cop.
meola(12/04/2011)
Do they treat authors as bad as employees?
I want to submit to them but after reading all these comments, I am afraid.
heads up(12/05/2011)
glad i heard about them screwing you on your reference...i won't be using them on my resume...it is supposed to be illegal to badmouth past employees...if u can prove it u could go to the labor board...pretty hard to prove though...i had a pretty good reference and an invite back in the future but i still don't trust them as i saw too much discrimination and abuse of employees in just a short time...felt like i was being let out of prison when i got laid off....didn't miss my bosses but i missed my co-workers...kind of makes you wonder why their son left...i can only imagine....there truly are some hardcore nasty managers...i noticed that certain employees were treated great if they knew how to be flirtatious with management...just saying...even when you do the very best you can and work as hard as you can you might do good if you don't open your mouth for any reason...pretty communist if you ask me
I'm back again(12/31/2011)
Bottom Line...Work at your own risk. Just keep your eyes and ears open. It "MIGHT" help to end up with a brown nose but don't count on it.
Heed: Work at your own risk.Just keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut. It "MIGHT" work,no guarantee.
LostMarbles(03/13/2012)
Wow, I haven't been on here in ages. Am I still there--NO, and am I glad. I keep in touch with my coworkers and it is so funny to hear the backstabbing stories about the two worst managers, Pansy and Gil. Psst, did you know that Gil is Pansy's shadow? They both need to retire--but they won't. Gil needs to feed his little ego by being around ppl, and Pansy needs to continue putting on the facade of being such an outstanding church member. Yeah, right.
It won't matter how many ppl come and go from there--as GW has constantly drilled it into their heads that they are all expendable.
maleka--I wish I knew of that story about Pansy but I don't. She is supposedly "engaged" to someone she's been with for the past 8-plus years. No wonder they never got married--because she never got a divorced. What a hypocrite! That is too laughable.
don't bother 101(03/30/2012)
This company continues to loose good employees. The latest news is that the operations dept has lost at least 6 ppl, plus a few that are on medical leave (probably not planning on returning). The funnier thing is that most of these ppl have over 5 years or more with the company. Tisk-tisk. At one time it was such a fun place to work at...not anymore. As fast as they come in those doors they turn around and walk right out. They put positions on craigslist because they don't want anyone knowing who they are until you're in their clutches. And mgmnt wastes prospective applicants time by interviewing them and then turning around and giving the position to an in-house employee. So take note to all you that have been interviewed and never got that call back--COUNT YOUR LUCKY STARS! If anything good has ever happened to you--it would be not getting hired at TMC.
hello(04/06/2012)
meola - from what i've seen, they are ok to their authors or any OUTSIDE people. its only those who actually work in that building under TMC that are abused. but, i could be wrong. all the managers there except for one are butt heads. good luck!
Garden isle(05/18/2012)
Yup everything u say about Tmc us entirely true...even coming from an outter island employee.. 8% paycutts in 2 yrs saying their not making money but they buy a new warehouse in las vegas and supposively bought out a couple of more product lines. Changing experation dates on out dated products.. They discriminate big time.. Management sucks!... Tmc us not a place to work at..tske it from experience.. Run as far as u can from dis place.. Itd not worth it at all..and hope oneday theyll have to file bankrupcy
ME Current Employee(07/31/2012)
lets shut this place down or at least get what we deserve out of them and one aboard going labor board with me?? we got audited this year and i still have the gentlemens number that came to audit us..whos with??

long time reader, first time commenter. i like coming here and trying to figure out who's who! (don't worry, i'm not management.) i also like the camaraderie. it's like a fellowship of sorts. it's funny, because i think everyone who works here knows about this site.
BTW...(08/12/2012)
Be careful who you talk to about this site. There's a very sneaky person who may be going to Dale about the comments (and commenters!). She knows who she is. I'm not talking about Pansy.
I'm back again(12/05/2012)
Don't care who goes to whom. Bottom line is this company sucks. Now I know...after someone said they sabotage you so they have a reason to let you go. Mind games is what this company is all about.

Gil is on the opposite end. (I'm gonna ruin the joke here...he is an ass.)
I chuckle when I hear or see her last name(12/07/2012)
Dale, bro, take care of your employees and offer better dental.
At Least The Commute Is Good(12/13/2012)
There's so much pressure ... to cover for Management's poor business decisions. "Special Value" is a euphemism for discounted crap that can't sell. Warehouse sale exists mostly to unload lousy inventory than Christmas sale or charity. By the way, is it legal to sell expired food? Hey Dale, it's your investment, waste it however you like, but quit expecting the general public to eat it up, smack their lips, and ask for seconds. And that yellow and orange shit is fug!
At Least The Commute Is Good(12/13/2012)
Ha. I meant shirt. But coincidentally, it is shit.
dont bother 101(01/08/2013)
Who is left to run that joint? The word is out that Gil went back to sales, Pansy isnt in purchasing anymore. Where the heck did Ms Know-It-All go. Good riddance. Nah, she'd be doing the company a great disservice if she left...yeah, right.
aloha warrior (01/09/2013)
working for TMC sucks! the micro managing is borderline unbearable. and why is everyone in management so secretive? I didn't realize this was a secret service operation!!!
Honestly...folks(03/08/2013)
TMC is a heck of a place to work; but, if you're out of work, as in unemployment benes are used up, and you need a job with benefits (as in Health), then sign on. Know that you will be dedicating your life and all waking hours to this company. It is BOOT CAMP. It follows all corporate structure, including when the buck stops...so does yours....(pay cuts and commission cuts)...reduction in staff. So honestly folks, in the end...Mr. Madden signs the paychecks. If you work for him, then YOU agreed to the TERMS of employment. Whining and complaining isn't going to change a thing. We can be all ZEN about this, but in the end make a choice...be there or choose to leave. It's that easy.
whatevvvvver (03/21/2013)
Honestly Folks...
you must be a "yes man".... just because you agree to work there doesn't give them the right to do what they do. The belittle you, harass you,
They are the WORST place to work for...
Word to future employees if you take the job take the experience and run!!! ASAP!
I'm back again(03/23/2013)
Wow! It's been 4 years since I slaved here. I'm not surprised to read all these nasty comments. Sad to say they are all true. Had to chuckle who commented on the dental plan. Someone sure needs it. Oh well some people like to pull their weight and yet aren't tough enough to see the dentist.
For all you folks paid salary(03/25/2013)
I know all the warehouse folks get paid peanuts, and salary folks can't begin to comprehend your struggle. But certain salary folks get the shaft too! (Certainly not management.)
You get 10 holidays and 10 days PTO; this is only about a month's worth of time off. You work eleven months a year for Dale Madden. BUT, you MUST work 9-hour days (not to mention Sunday warehouse sale and random other stuff they won't ask hourly workers to do on the weekend because they don't want to pay overtime). Consider an average 8-hour day the rest of the world works. You work an extra hour every day for eleven months, or say 48 weeks (52 weeks minus 4 weeks worth of time off). Those *extra hours* equal 240 (an extra hour a day for five days, and five days for those 48 weeks). Those 240 extra hours equals ... 30 work days (240 hours divided by an 8-hour work day)!!! So you get 20 days off but you have to work an equivalent of 30 days anyway!
"Yeah, but you're salary, what do you expect?" Well, now consider how much you get paid! You basically get no time off and you work an extra week!
For all you folks paid salary(03/25/2013)
And before a Madden ass kisser pipes up about having a choice to work there and if it sucks so bad, just leave, well, quite frankly, you're right. But is it any wonder why turnover is so high?! The Maddens get what they deserve.
dont bother 101(04/13/2013)
In case you haven't heard...the TMC building is up for sale. This is the sign that there will be NO MORE TMC within the next 5 years. Poor judgement and decisions have cost this company big time. More employees with over 5 yrs. are continuing to run out that front door. So, so sad. Then you have all this favoritism going on in warehouse with the "new" operations manager. Bunch of backstabbing and drama in that place. I'm so glad I worked there when it was a fun and decent place. The employees that still hang around get more depressed with the situation of all the changes. Hopefully, they all will find it within myselfs to make the sacrifice and LEAVE!
I'm back again(05/23/2013)
Whom ever wrote about the TMC building for sale...Really???
about job(05/27/2013)
well i think this is not the thing about the your work place such type of things are going to be ever6y where even where i am working the similar things happened.
Locksmith Pembroke Pines
extmcslavetoo(05/29/2013)
Yes, the "FOR SALE" sign is up in front of the office. Will the place ever sell? I doubt it. They have no plans on moving out if it were to sell. If some crazy rich person were to purchase the property, they should just jack up the rent extremely high because the Maddens have LOADS of money squirled away.

sounds like this company needs to clean house or someone in managment needs to step up and acknowledge this kind of treatment of employees.
