Beware Applebees Hell Shifts!

So, I've been waiting tables a while. Casual dining, fine dining. I decide to move back to my hometown for a while, get a job. Kinda chill out for a while. I know I am a good waiter. I get the compliments, I am well liked by my coworkers. So, with confidence brimming, I go to Applebees. But at Applebees, you just can't wait tables if you are good. You have to be punished. You have to give up time you would have liked to worked waitering, to do crap shifts as the Carside ToGo person, or as an Expediter in the kitchen. With togo, you might make tips, you might not. You do get paid more than server minimum wage, but if you are working 30 hours a week on the floor, as a waiter, and you are claiming your tips 100 percent, so you can get a mortgage in the future, your extra wages for Carside ToGo shifts get sucked up in taxes. Money you never see. The Expo shifts are worse! And why I quit. You see, you have to work for free. No, technically, the company is paying you. But you never see anymore money for doing these shifts. It goes to the tax man. I confronted my GM about this as I was to clock in. He couldn't answer me. When I complained again, he said, well think of it as experience. Sure, I need to get f****ng experience making no money! I guess I should not do anything then. So I quit. If you are an experienced waiter or waitress, DONT WORK FOR APPLEBEES....THEY ARE THIEVES OF YOUR TIME!

I don't see any illegalities unless you were working literally for free. For example, you had to work an extra hour or shift and you were not paid for those hours worked. Unfortunately, no matter where you work you may very well have to perform duties outside of your work description.

Crap! I like that restaurant! We have a 7 year annual history of going there as a family when we go to our summer place. I always wondered about that curbside pick-up thing. I would probably tip at least 2 bucks if I ever took advantage of it. I always thought the host/hostess had to do it--not a separate person--who would be giving up better wages as a host/hostess or waiter/waitress. I thought this would be an additional responsibility to a host/hostess and if they got tips it would be a little bonus. Thank-you for enlightening me! If I ever do take advantage of this service at any restaurant, I will tip--and better than 2 bucks now that I know!

I'm so sorry that Applebee's treat you guys like that. I used to like going there but recently we just kept running into stupid problems...like..oh we make mudslides that taste like ice milk and crap,we have no more beer of the brand you like, sorry its taking damn near forever for your food to come out and by the way I won't even come by your table to even let you know until 25 minutes has passed since I've served your drinks. I'm not saying that all of them is like that. But I know some waiters aren't like that. I hope that you found a job that makes you feel worthwhile and happy.

I've worked as a server off and on since I was a teenager and know how you feel. The problem sounds like weak or uncaring management. Hire those less able to do the physically demanding jobs to handle carside and hostess/hosting jobs. If they have great personalities, they'll do well and appreciate the work. The bottom line is you can't take a successful waiter or waitress and ask them to take a de facto wage cut and expect them to be happy. It means those running the show have no clue about the restaurant business.
It would be interesting to find out if this is true at all Applebee's or just this one. I know someone who works at one locally and will check it out...

Waiters and servers grow up. I work the kitchen at another retaurant, and if you don't like the pay, find another career. you all complain about the lack of tips, yet most servers walk away with a helluv alot more money than I make, and I am one of the highest payed people in our company. You spend a lot of time complaining about the back, but there are no thank you's when we bust our ass to make you look good. and talk about doing things you aren't paid to do, we have to know everything about the entire kitchen, you only have to know, what, three positions? Crap, get yourself a life and grow up.
Oh, and by the way, every now and then, tip your cooks, you may be surprised at how much they appreciate it, It may even make you appreciate your tips a bit more.

I forgot to add I was scheduled to be a kitchen expediter without being asked. If you know whether I have any legal grounds on this please post a comment. Thanks.
