Tis the season to lay people off

Every year at this time, I am reminded of the heartless company for whom I gave 22 years of my career. I won't name names other than to say they are in downtown Chicago. In the late 90's, they laid approximately 500 of us off, 2 weeks before Christmas. In speaking with other people I have met, this seems to be more common than I thought. SO I have two questions as I reflect upon this holiday season:
1) Have any of you been laid off in the month of December?
and
2) Is there some sort of financial end-of-the-year reason for laying people off in the month of December?
I can't think of any of reason than just plain being heartless and greedy!

This happened to a friends of mine too. I think when the numbers are bad in the 4th quarter they do a quick cut back to come in where they need to be. It's a shame...people aren't people any more, they are "headcount".

Unfortunately, this time of year is when your boss and his boss (etc.) think of their bonus's. The less they spend, the more bonus they get. No matter how much they say they care, don't believe it. They've forgotten what it means to be on our side of the road and couldn't give a care less.

heard this morning that a place called cold stone creamery is pink slipping up to 20% at their home base and not because of any business reversals. The company is expanding and branching out into different directions. The employees are no longer needed. This is where the firm got its start. Now isn't that the appropriate gratitude.

Layoffs in December may occur because it is the end of the 4th quarter? I got 'pinked' on November 1 once. They said they wanted to do it 'before the holidays to prevent holiday blues'. Hello??? It was November 1, had they not been to the mall lately - it was full swing in the holiday season! I survived though, and from the sounds of it so did everyone else. It is a scrooge thing to do though...

Ashamed to admit it: I was directed to lay a few people off in December several years back...it was a year end cost savings "demonstration" to begin the new year with lowered expenses. It makes me sad to tell you one manager thought it was terrific because the holidays were unpaid for the laid off, too. The idea was it would make our down time less costly. And those of us working were miserable, doing extra and feeling like schmucks. Fortunately, the cost-"mismanager" was let go the following spring...with a thud. Oh well.
