Pardon me, but I thought I might like to finish out my last year of schooling...

It was nearing the end of my Senior year of college, and as a Child and Family Studies major, I was applying for positions with local (my then-husband was still in school) child care and pre-school facilities. I had several interviews where I was politely declined a position due to the centers' needs for an immediate hire, but this interview seemed to be going quite well. The director suggested that I could work part-time until the end of the semester (only a month or two off), filling in for lunch breaks and at the beginning and end of the day, and then pick up a full-time position once I graduated. It sounded like the perfect scenario for both of us, so we proceeded to talk hours.
I was at this time taking a relatively light course load, only 14 credit hours, and working 10 hours a week at the campus pre-school as my work study, so during the time that this center would be open I had about 30 hours of availability, but to allow time for my studies, I really only wanted to put in 15-20 hours. I was very clear on this matter, and was also completely flexible within my hours of availability as to which of them I would work.
The director however, proceeded to schedule me to work every possible spare minute of my days. I had no time to get from the center back to campus for my classes. I had no time for breakfast, lunch or dinner (center opened about 6:30 a.m. and closed about 6:00 p.m.). I would certainly not have any time or energy for my homework or to complete final papers and prepare for exams.
I reiterated that I would not be able to give them more than 20 hours a week, and that if this was not compatible with their needs, it would be best if we acknowledged that up front. The director finally agreed to this, and then wanted me to go home to change (I had arrived for the interview in a black suit, much to the director's puzzlement) and come back to work the afternoon, as it was a holiday and thence in her eyes I could not possibly have plans.
I told her I would not be able to work that afternoon, as I had already promised the time to my campus job, but that I would think about her offer and call her back later in the day.
Needless to say, my call back was to decline the position. I shortly thereafter was offered a full-time position with the campus center, which had been my first choice anyhow, so it was all to the good. :-)
