As a former employee of McDonald's I can say it HASN'T been a good experience. Let me tell you why so you'll know what you'll be getting into if you're hired there:
-lack of management participation in new employee training process(all of the crew do all of the training!); I had to teach myself everything when I first started and had to learn from trial-and-error.
When I asked for help from management they were no where to be found. Which leads into my next point.
-lack of management help when needed during a rush; This has happened more times than I can count on my own two hands. We're in the middle of a rush and where are all of the managers to be found? Yucking it up in the office about something they did some Saturday night while employees struggle to keep pace with the business streaming in. When they do finally get off their butts(I wanted to use another word here but I'll be nice) they choose to chew out the employees for doing the best they could while said managers sat on their collective butts.
-Favoritism;I was late 5 minutes once and was threatened with a write up. Another person that was late numerous times was warned and then it was forgotten. Then same said person was late AGAIN and was warned...no write up. So I'm wondering:how is that fair in any way?
-Verbal Abuse; Now this happened at another McDonald's that I worked at. When you're told that you're stupid, dumb and called numerous other names in a non-joking fashion, without the managers intervening, how long do you think you would want to stay there? I just quit without a word because it occurred to me that the management there wouldn't ever give a crap.
-Miscommunication between management and employees; This happened fairly recently. I had to call out one day to go to the doctor since I wasn't feeling well and they told me okay well get a doctors note.
I went to the doctor and found out that I had the flu and was dehydrated because everything that I tried to get down would just come up or out. I had to be out for 3 days so I called them that very night and told them that I had a doctors note for said date of 3 days from the current date at the time. I come in 3 days later and find out that I've been taken off of the schedule. It turns out that I was suspended!!! Someone told my main manager that I would not have a doctors excuse this time around! I leave the note in the office and rush out of the parking lot in a huff. The main manager calls me and tells me that I'm not suspended after seeing my doctors note. He tries to play it off after I demand to know who told him that I wouldn't have a doctors note. Needless to say I was ticked but went off to work since I still needed the money and insurance.
-morning shift is left to clean up night shift messes;I have opened numerous times and have found many things not done from the previous nights. From tables not being wiped down to areas not being cleaned and stocked to left over dishes and messes left over in the grill. Needless to say: NIGHT SHIFT PEOPLE ARE LAZY. I used to work the night shift and found my work load doubled since no one else wanted to do their jobs. They just wanted to play around, talk and eat on the clock(supposedly a big no no but that didn't stop them did it?), while I struggled do what I supposed to do and what they were supposed to before I left.
In closing, I hope that some of the heads of McDonald's happen to stumble onto this letter and are thoroughly embarrasssed with the way their managers run this supposed "business".

I've been thinking about doing that for quite some time. I'm just not sure how I can go about acquiring grants. I'm also not sure what I really want to do with my life. For a while I had the medical industry set in my sights(I wanted to be a CNA) but now...I just don't know. Nothing appeals to me right now. I've thought about going into the tech field like my husband has but I'm not sure what I'd be getting myself into. I just need a little more time to think on it I guess.

Ask the school to help arrange financial aid or a grant. They have staff that can assist you. I am not promising you paradise but some of your frustration will disappear when you are in a career with a decent salary and future. Do this NOW! The longer you wait the harder it gets to go back to school.

If I don't find a job soon I'll be looking into the school thing sooner than I thought.
I was relying on the health insurance(the halfway crappy insurance) McDonald's provided to help get my achalasia(you'll have to google it)fixed. But I probably won't have it fixed for a while now if I don't get some sort of state help.
I neglected to mention in this emotional yet very accurate review, that McDonald's had fired me on a day that I had had a car accident(which was supposedly the 25th of this month but I didn't find out about this bout of misfortune till the 26th). I had told them(work), when they called later in the day, that I really didn't feel like coming in since my neck was bothering me. And in all honesty it was. They told me O.K. and hung up on me. I didn't find out until the very next day that I was fired!
So I guess now it wouldn't have mattered if I went to the doctor or not because they would've fired me anyway. I talked to someone on a medical hot line and was told that I had minor whiplash but that I need to go to the doctor to check for further damage. I've just been treating the condition at home since it's what any doctor would've told me to do anyway.
Oh and you want to know the excuse they gave for firing me? They were tired of me calling out on the weekends!!! I HAD JUST GOTTEN IN A FREAKING CAR WRECK!!! I was in a state of shock all day so I probably wouldn't have been worth a damn at work anyway! I guess they just expect people to shake it off and be ready to work despite whatever traumatic experiences a person had just went through. The guy that hit me had several warrants out for his arrest and he was also "intoxicated" but not on alcohol. This guy didn't stop he just kept going when he hit me and his truck stalled when it got to the top of the hill, where he desperately tried to start his truck in a futile attempt to get away. Luckily the cops grabbed him before he could make that attempt. They told me that he would be paying for all my damages to my vehicle. Heh...what good is a vehicle now with no job huh?
But enough of my rant...I'm going to go turn in the applications that filled out last night.
And on those several occasions that I "called out on the weekends", on one I had strep throat and on the second one I was dehydrated and had the flu! Both were times that I was contagious and I believe it might say in some type of work pamphlet that you're not supposed to come in if you are contagious.
My Two Cents(04/28/2008)
My very first job at the age of 16 was at a McDonalds. After a few weeks I noticed that the phone would ring but noone would pick up. I asked a manager why noone ever answered the phone. His response was: we don't answer the phones because it is either an employee calling in sick or a customer complaining! I was shocked. A few months later I got sick and I tried to call and let them know. As usual, noone answered the phone. I asked my Mom to go there and tell them. She went and encountered one of our "bad" managers. The bad manager upbraided my Mom! My Mom had to explain, "Do you really want my daughter coughing on your food?" Needless to say, I lasted there less than six months.

First of all, you write really well.
My experiences 30 years ago in fast food taught me restaurants are the last resort for jobs. In the early 1980's, I lived in a mill town that was not hiring and I got stuck at a Dairy Queen. I was exposed to some of the meanest people I have ever met. The owners, staff and customers made sure you had a rotten day every day.
I went back to school and got out. Thank God!
The work is too hard and the wages are too low. Office politics are in every job you will ever get but it is some comfort if you can pay your bills.
Your writing shows that you are organized and intelligent. Please go back to school and get out. Find a job where you would be compensated a fair amount. Good Luck!
