Workplace Bullying

Being bullied by a boss or co-worker is no fun. Draw from these job experiences to help learn what to watch out for, or improve your situation.
My bully, abusive witch of an ex boss Written by Susan on 10/17/2010I would like to tell anyone who is dealing with an abusive boss to get out now- don't sit there and take it because it will only get worse. Yes, I know that people have families to support... But if you try to resolve it the best way you can and it doesn't get better- Get out!

I worked for a very creative, talented person on and off for about a year and a half. Everything was great at first. I thought I meant a friend for life and they cared about me. Eventually, I saw that "X" had a temper and got very abusive. I was cussed at, told to shut the f up, was belittled in front of other people- including clients, was accused of stealing from her, was given the silent treatment, was not paid for a few hours of work that I did, and on and on. I was told that, " I don't care what you do, comments were made about my size- I am very thin, she is on the heavier side, I was called stupid... There were a few times when she brought in an outsider to tell me I was no longer welcome and that is when I left but I did not and she always took me back.
I did not want to give up on the situation because I so wanted to belong somewhere and if she was not so abusive or angry I probably could have had something really good there. I was looking for a mentor and my niche. The times when I was treated like trash I should have left.
What made it all come to a head was that she really gave it to me and I told her to f off and then some. When I went back to talk to her she twisted everything around to were it was all my fault and she was going to call the police- a year after knowing each other! I texted her and called the office phone and said I was done. I got an e-mail two days later her threatening me in such a nasty, way and basically her saying SHE was done with me.
She was totally abusive and unprofessional. Having had a chance to see into her private life- well it isn't pretty... I think she is a psychopath and has no empathy for other people and has obvious mental issues.
I am still healing and getting over this as this all happened a few weeks ago. I know that we reap what we sow in life and I hope that really applies to her. I hope that anyone reading this- just know that staying in these situations is so not worth it and if you start seeing signs of an abusive, manipulative personality then pay attention to it and Run like the wind!

I know exactly what you went through because I had a boss just like that. He was a small mean little man who had to constantly make people smaller than himself. It got so bad he was even insulting his own customers. To make a very long story short, it has a fairy tale ending; This troll couldn't pay his bills and had to sell out to a larger shop who wanted his accounts, as a result I got laid off and was unemployed for four months. The best thing that could have happened to me. I got a four month vacation, landed another job in another print shop [I'm a Printer] and couldn't be happier! My new boss treats me with respect, don't have to beg for supplies to do my job with, I could go on and on how it's heaven now to work for a sane wonderful person. Today I learned I got a raise in pay retroactive from my last pay period. What a nice surprise that was for me today! When you work for someone who is reasonable and kind it really does make the quality of your life more vibrant. I am willing to work my fingers to the bone for these people! You are so right to say that it's just not worth working for abusive people, in the long run, you run out of respect for yourself way before you run out of respect for them. That is just not healthy. Get away from these vampires, pronto!

I think this is a bigger problem than most people realize. I've been at offices where they appear to NEVER clean out the ducts, and the vents are black with soot and crap from office air pollution. And it only gets worse over time.

Not to mention all the VOCs that get emitted from cheap building materials used throughout most offices.

It is not a healthy environment to be spending the majority of your waking hours.

I'm Good Enough, I'm Smart Enough, and Doggonnit, People Like Me! Written by Peon 85 on 01/07/2010I originally posted this as a comment and am now posting my story as I desperately need to vent and would like some advice.
I long to love my job and at very least like the a-holes, oops, co-workers that surround me daily. It is thanks to bored, inflated-ego owning, and generally mean people that I am the victim of a witch hunt at my job which has been two years in the making. It seems that since I won't leave they are now trying to get me to do so by drastically reducing my hours.
It was after my maternity leave last year that I was called in to my bosses office to be 'counseled'. I was told by my boss that my co-worker did my job and hers while I was gone so I had better step it up.."several notches".. and the witch hunt ensued. The following week, and again, I had just returned from maternity leave, this same co-worker said to me right in the middle of the office and in front of my boss "I had a dream last night that you had a HUGE stack of work in your basket several feet high and I was like oh my God, what do you DO all day!!??" I responded, quite taken aback, "Uh I hope that wasn't a premonition" To which she snidely replied, "uh yeah me too". What a HUGE snatch. Pardon my small vocabulary. I can't find a better word to describe her right now. No wonder her boyfriend dumped her. Maybe other parts of her are as cold as her heart. Mind you, this is a person who feels that "kids are gross". When I brought my son in to show off at everyone's request, including her's, she said "hope he grows into his head". Nice.
I will give her this, however, if ever God invented a person for the office profession it is her. Perhaps that is why she herself has such a large head. She has the funny bunny calendar above her desk that says things like "Thanks for being ugly. It makes me laugh."

Since the recession began my boss has been looking for reasons to fire someone, or as he claimed when bringing me in to write me up, he is "looking for reasons to keep people". Mind you , if one of us were to leave she would gain her 40-hour work week back. I am the only one in the office whose hours have been cut for the third time now, down to 16 hours per week. All others are still at the 32. I am also the only one with a family.
It's hard to keep a smile on my face there now that I've been made to feel so expendable and know without a doubt that people are out to get me. I know my bitterness is toxic and i pray it will resolve itself soon. I just filed for partial unemployment so when they find that out I'm sure the rumor mill will run even thicker with fun and excitement. I catch myself making up songs on the way home that begin with the phrase "F--- you people, you and you and yes you too". Sorry for the Debbie Downerness I really have never been this bitter. Do I have a sit down with my boss and tel him I've filed for Partial Unemployment or just let them all find out and endure more talking behind my back?

You have definitely been targeted for removal. They found out the work could get done while you were away on maternity leave, and now you're expendible. File for the partial unemployment, let them find out the hard way, and use all your time and resources looking for another job, and also talk to a lawyer about discrimination - as well as contacting your state labor board to let them know that you returned from maternity leave and are about to be fired on trumped-up charges. Cause them trouble. Document everything.

Posted by not a serf on 01/09/2010:
Contact the Federal EEOC or your states Human Rights Office, and file a complaint because there could be sexual and age discrimination against you. The fact that you were written up for taking leave to care for a baby violates the family medical leave act. Also they cut your hours to 16 hours a week. It only takes a couple of phone calls and they are really helpful. I helped a co-worker file a complaint at the horrible job we used to work at and now there are three federal agencies investigating the place. That's what employer get for not playing fairly in the sandbox.

Posted by allbymyself on 01/20/2010:
Sorry Peon, but you had a baby. Stay at home and take care of it... Those of us who wish to remain unencumbered by the burden of children end up doing your work anyways. Childrearing is a full time job and one you wanted, otherwise you would not have had a baby! Enjoy your children.. they grow up fast!

This office is a disgrace. That's why there are laws in this country to protect moms.
Here's a woman who wants to work and take care of her family. If she went on welfare these same people would complain that she was on welfare. Children are born everyday whether they are planned or unplanned. If people waited for a good time to have children none of us would be born.

Posted by allbymyself on 01/25/2010:
I think everyone should wait until you have enough resources to feed you child. It is called responsibility and yes if more people were responsible there would be much less poverty and misery... for children. And much less child abuse..

I am being bullied by my boss Written by PERI777 on 01/04/2010Well in short, my boss has been bullying me for quite a while now and I think that another co-worker has something to do with it. She has never liked me and has gone out of her way to get me in trouble with our boss. I have been nothing but nice with this woman so I do not understand why she doesn't like me. My boss always takes her side and there are never any consequences for this particular employee. I work in a small office where I am the office manager and there are two other employees. The receptionist and the executive assistant to the President of the company. I basically have the title but not the power to do anything here. I am constantly criticized and he sends me the most rude and nasty emails. I am basically scared to open my email every morning. Wondering if again he sent me one of those mean emails. To top it off, I was excluded from a Christmas bonus for two years in a row. I do not understand why. It seems like he has something personal against me. I am a good employee, always working hard and on top of things in the office. My receptionist likes me and doesn't understand why I am treated so poorly. I am sure there are a lot of other people dealing with the same issue. It is so stressful to work in this type of environment. It's very hostile and you can feel the tension as soon as you walk in the door. Fortunately I have an opportunity to be able to leave this job soon and I am very fortunate for that. Unfortunately the receptionist will now be dealing with all of this when I leave. She hates the thought of it so she's looking for another job. Read 5 Replies   |   Add a Reply

If you have a boss that hates you there is NOTHING you can do to please that boss. I tried for a year to please this kind of she devil. I begged to be transferred, thank god they let me.

Two people replaced me and two people left. She can't even get anyone to apply for my old position.

My work life and my home life improved as soon as I was away from her. I stopped yelling at my family the way she yelled at me.

One year after I left she had quadruple bypass surgery. Her good buddies (the ones she humiliated me in front of) made sure I knew her medical information and made jokes about her dying.

Some people are toxic and you just have to stay away from them. Keep telling yourself this too shall pass. Good Luck.

I like chubby girl's comment about her toxic boss. The fact that the people her boss put her down in front of made sure to let her not only know that her former boss was not only critically ill but made fun of her death as well illustrates just how toxic the environment these people create becomes. Everybody hates everybody; as soon as something goes wrong or defenses go down the attack is on. I believe like many experts in this field that all of this stems from mental illness...

Besy Buy Harassment Written by ajc125kx on 12/12/2009I've worked at Best Buy for a little over 3 months. I was hired as a "seasonal employee" for the time leading up to and through the Christmas holiday. The first month was fine, no problems no complaints, as time went on I began to notice things. There were certain groups of people at Best Buy who stuck together, such as managers, supervisors, sales associates, and warehouse employees. If you worked in that respective department you had to stick together with those people. If you did not, you would be outcast, labeled as a trouble maker or something along those lines. I for one possess a leader type of personality and have never been the type to conform and follow a clique. I am 25 years old and a college graduate. Most of the people I work with are 19-25 with some college or none at all. They saw that I did not fit in and knew I was not at Best Buy for a career, but was simply using the job as a stepping stone to greater employment opportunities. This made some people very mad and jealous. After 2 month of working I began to experience harassment from certain people. For example; people who were not my supervisor were giving me unreasonable tasks, others were trash talking behind my back, a homo erotic picture text message from an unknown number was sent to my phone, and a similar picture drawn with my name inside of an 18 wheeler trailer we were unloading. For the record I am not gay nor have I lead anybody to believe that. It just shows the immaturity that people like myself have to deal with while trying to make an honest buck. The employee who drew the picture was warned by the managers and no further action was taken other than the warning. I have asked several supervisors and managers to please place me in another department rather than keep working in the warehouse. 3 weeks has gone by with no results. I continue to receive the looks, snickers, and trash talking.

They probably resent your youth and your education. They are stuck there and you have options. Jealousy makes people do very mean things. Let your detractors be your motivators. Tell yourself, I will spend more time getting a better job just to get away from these people. When I was younger I worked a McJob and the waitresses treated me like I crashed their family reunion. I went to school and had better jobs and never went back. They did me a favor if I were comfortable there I never would have left. The Rolling Stones were right, you don't always get what you want but you get what you need.

I sympathize with your situation. I was bullied in a similar manner by a co-worker for over two years at a former employer. She harassed me, creating and maintaining a hostile work environment, until I was diagnosed with PTSD as a result of the bullying. The foundation of her abusive behavior was her disapproval of my religious and political beliefs, which is illegal and should have been addressed promptly by management. Unfortunately management refused to address the problem and also refused to provide me with a safe working environment, so I had to get a job elsewhere. This happened at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho. Saint Alphonsus is a part of the Trinity Health system headquartered in Novi, Michigan. Like many other large organizations Trinity Health seems to care only about making a profit, not about the safety and health of their employees and customers. They have well-written standards that are impressive to anyone, but no attempt is made by management to enforce or even follow those standards. More information about my experience can be found on my blog at www.leonardnolt.blogspot.com

I think I was blackballed out of my career by a BAD employer Written by shortybikergirl on 12/11/2009If someone can help me with this I would appreciate it. Not sure where to go or what to do about this as well. I busted my tail to get through school a couple of years ago. I was working on my associates degree in Applied Science with a Major in Surgical Technology. During this time, I had to do externships for this and had chosen to go to a hospital in Northern Michigan for the majority of the 20 week externship. During the time I was there, I was treated very disrespectfully by the crew and this was allowed for some reason, including an incident where a preceptor slapped my hand. Even through all that, they still wanted me after I graduated from college. Against my beter judgement I went back there to work as an employee. Working as a surgical tech is a difficult enough job without the harrassment of other techs, but this was continuously allowed. The backstabbing, the gossip and the arrogant attitudes among the staff made working for this company absolutely horrendous! As time wore on, I was definitly thinking about leaving on my own to pursue another hospital...till...an incident involving a surgeon who didnt follow protocol on a case where a needle wasnt found and an incompetant RN circulator who didnt get on the ball and call Xray as soon as possible and the XRAY department that MISSED the needle till we were already closed! 3 screwups on their part...I demanded the surgeon stop, I told the RN 3 times to call for xray and was ignored. So...after all that....no one asked for a meeting...not my manager, not the RN...no one. There is always supposed to be a meeeting when an event happens like that....well, needless to say...I WAS BLAMED FOR THE WHOLE THING...No one asked me what happened...I was just taken into the office and told I was back on probationary period with a preceptor again. I accepted this....and said..ok, well I will do this as long as no one knows what is going on. they agreed to that...by the next day....EVERY ONE IN THE OR KNEW. What happened to right to privacy? For the next 3 months, I was harrassed by other coworkers to the point that I went home crying most of the time, went back on antidepressants, and didnt want be there anymore. My boss was receiving bs lies for other staff that had issues with me from the beginning and in the end was told it would be best if I just simply quit. So, frankly...I did. I went to HR complaining about it and they did nothing but recommend that I see the hospital counselor...in other words...i was crazy! I had had enough! Since that time, I havnt been able to work as a surgicl tech since. I have had a couple interviews , but it has been over a year~No one wants to hire me and I think I may have been blackballed from my job that I worked so hard for. I graduated at the top of my class with a 3.76 GPA....im not stupid by any means! Im not sure exactly what I can do about this...but please...if any of you know what I can do about this...please let me know. Do I need a lawer, where do I go from here????? Im homeless now, living with my mother. Lost my home, my car.....EVERYTHING. My direct email is redindia2@yahoo.com.....any advise would be helpful!

Proving you are being blackballed is hard. You'll need to find a lawyer who will take a cut of the award, not one you have to pay up front, and it will be a very long and painful battle to try to get awards out of them - because they will lie like rugs, and documents may even be falsified to make your case look worse. It may be that you will have to scrap your career and start over, or simply wait for the main blackballer to drop dead, which is what I had to do. Maybe you can volunteer your services at a vet clinic in order to get a recommendation for a real job, if you want to stick with the career. Either way, it is not going to be easy, but this is something a young person can recover from, in time.

Posted by Old Nurse on 12/13/2009:
I also think you were blackballed out of this position. However, since you are not able to handle the stress of the job and the aftermath, I would suggest a job in a vets office or perhaps a dentist. Look into ortho, rehab, try a nursing home. I am not coming down on you for falling apart but it appears you cannot handle stress and I know it can get really, really bad. Good luck.

Posted by sphincter detector on 12/21/2009:
The medical community as it relates to Hospitals and Surgeons is a very corrupt entity. Because of the financial implications of malpractice etc.. no one's going to volunteer to highlight or formalize the kinds of gross neglect situations you described. If you try going to the College of Physicians and Surgeons to complain...no one will beleive you or take your side. Doctors stick together and the College does not like to have it's insurance premiums increased for payouts. It happens all the time, they do documentaries about it on W5 and CNN all the time. You're always hearing about some douchebag Attending that left a sponge or scissors inside of a gastric bypass patient and the poor guy dies of scepticemia 2 weeks later. If you try to be a hero you'll get yourself pegged as a blabber mouth or a shit disturber you'll be blackmarked and no one will hire you. This is not Greys Anatomy, it's real life and this type of corruption is not a myth. It's going to take more than an eager beaver college grad to change this organization. It's so much bigger than one person - It takes a public outcry and media focus. So unless you want to start a very public protest in front of your local government office and maybe get some press for it, you are an unfortunate casualty of this industry. I've worked very closely to this industry and have seen it first hand many times. I agree with the other comments here, try to get into a vet's office or some other kind of practice with 6 degrees of separation , where the long arm of Hypocratic Union can't find or reach you..

I know this sounds defeatist, but a good general only goes to war if he knows he can win. Fact of life. Be wise and understand the game and know the rules.

If I could read minds like this idiot demands... Written by Anonymous on 08/18/2009...I would be cleaning house in poker tournaments, not working with this idiot. This idiot thinks he owns the break areas and in his mind there is ONE table where I can sit. And if I dare sit elsewhere he'll launch a temper tantrum to "give me the hint". This idiot has done other stupid things in front of others too. One was barge into a closed washroom door just as I was about to exit and damn near knocked me and the maintenance manager over with his mass. Then yell at me for being behind the door! I guess I'm also supposed to have X-Ray vision as well as read minds enough to make a poker face obsolete.

What is wrong with this idiot who demands I have impossible abilities? Next thing is he'll demand I predict the future.

Fired Written by Wifey2 on 07/11/2009My husbnd was recently fired from his job. The company did not follow the hand book, there is no union, and the HR person lied about what did there when he applied for a new job. Is there legal resoures that he can look into? The hand book also said they would pay any vacation due to him and that did not happen. His insurance was canceled the day he was terminated but they deduct insurance payment on his final check. How long was he employed? If it was a short time, then he may have no options.

To be honest, unless your husband was harassed and can prove it, these cases are not worth the aggrevation of going to court.

I know it stinks and you are upset but if this company treated him like this it is good he no longer works there!

depends on the State you live in.

check with your State's Labor Board - should your State have one.

check if the firing is a disguised lay-off. DES, the unemployment office has gotten wise to those. - apply for unemployment compensation anyway. drag that man of yours to apply on line or in person. override his pride if necessary. i would not mention any benefits lost or they could be deducted, but that's just me.

check with your State's Department of Insurance. ask if you can use the insurance for another month or get a refund.

Posted by BonusOnus on 07/14/2009:
Your husband's employer is treading dangerous ground here.

1) I don't know what state your are in but in California, you HAVE to pay a laid off person for their unused vacation hours. If not, this is like shortchanging them.

CHeck with your state's employment board.

2) The company can cancel your health insurance on the day of termination. However, it cannot make you pay for the insurance that they terminated. That's another ground for a valid complaint.

You don't need a lawyer. You can get info on the state labor board and file a complaint.

And move on and make sure to tell everybody else how horrible your husband's previous employer is.

Desk Jockey Written by kmb241 on 05/13/2009So, let me start by saying my boss is a total nutjob. Anything that anyone says about me is automatically taken as gospel, then I get hauled into her office and TOLD that I did something wrong. She has no regard to my side of things. This started when one co-worker said I was leaving early with another co-worker (I wasn't) Rather than ask the co-worker I am supposedly leaving with, I was dragged in and threatened with a write-up. Shortly thereafter I suffered a stress related seizure. Now, that same vulture co-worker who made up the first story decided that I "hurt her feelings" when I said something A WEEK AGO! Of course, the boss gets involved because it wouldn't cause problems if she just told me she was upset. This nutcase wants to get me fired! I've had enough. Now, the co-worker asks as though I have done something wrong. I'm not the one running to mommy every time someone looks at me wrong. What can I do?Read 2 Replies   |   Add a Reply

Document everything the whackjob says and does, and be absolutely sweet, polite and nice to her, even going so far as to make sure there are witnesses to this, so she can't claim you're being mean. Think of it as "the cameras are rolling and I need that Oscar", to inspire you to act like you're the nicest person on the face of the earth, even when you'd like to paste her one with the first blunt object that comes to hand. It's a challenge, I know. Maybe mention to the office gossip that she's always running to Mommy about the problems, too - cut her support lines.

Inethical business practices Written by aarav on 03/13/2009I have joined this company on OPT. They provided me training and forced me to fake my resume from start to finish. Inspite of agreeing to all this, there marketers were not able to get a single interview for me as they already have 80+ others to market from previous batches. if you want to find out why you are not being marketed, they simply tell you to leave the company if you are not happy. I had my own reasons for sticking with them as my OPT was expiring and I had filed for H1B with them - not to mention, I had to pay $3500 in personal account of the CEO - Manoj Agarwal for filing my H1. My H1 has been approved and I m benched for over 6 months now without any pay check. I cant file for a transfer and i m stuck with this f***ing company.... One I have read about "hired" all their H1b to work in Ohio. It is also my understanding that by law they are to pay local wages. Once in Ohio (low wages) they would ship the H1b to N.Y or California at the same low Ohio wage.

I do have to commend you for being a person of ethics!

Mood swing bosses Written by Gamelady on 02/25/2009From the minute I enter the place of work to the minute I leave I dread working with the assistant manager. For a start he shows me a frosty face like I've done something nasty to him.

However when the other staff arrive he is pally, upbeat and jokes with them like they are old mates. It makes me feel very uncomfortable, however he doesn't care about that because he pointed out to me that customers are happy with his customer service and that is all that counts.

Since I started I feel I have been forced to work well over my 40 hour contract, they call it the "needs of the busines". So while I work a 12 hour day to oil the already greasy palms of my employers my own needs a overlooked. I just end up angry, upset, over tired, and my relationships have deterioated so badly I have considered all sorts.

They seen to take it granted that I will work all hours without warning and before I am allowed home I clock up an extra 2 or 3 hours each day (which means I am actually working for way below minimum wage). I have complained several times about it however to no avail.

My productivity has waned and I find myself considering shortcuts though I have not resigned myself to stealing YET, I look and feel haggard most days, not even a chair to sit on during that time because the ONLy chair is in the managers office.

Today one colleague who get's on great with both managers turfed my belongings out of my locker claiming that the locker is his. I thought he was joking until I found my things on the floor. My manager did nothing about it other than suggest that I throw out one of my co-workers things because she is only a part-timer.

This is for a game shop and I suppose that is how they survive the credit crunch, by lowering staff moral so that they think they are worthless.

If you are working OT and not getting paid for it then talk to a lawyer! There are some lawyers who LIVE for that kind of stuff!

As to the locker-dumping - I wouldn't do that to ANY other worker! It would only cause bad feelings and that sounds like you have enough of that going on now!

It is a shame that bosses become such anusknots knowing there is little that you can do because of the economy.

I came across this today and may place some light on people's situations ...

Rankism, the term for abuse of position within a hierarchy, can occur in any human gathering. Like all social animals, humans establish a pecking order when they create groups. Hierarchies allow us to know how we can interact and accomplish whatever are our goals—producing a widget, preparing a meal, or choosing which movie to attend. When some persons in the hierarchy are treated as special somebodies and others as unimportant nobodies, you have rankism.

....she has no business touching your belongings!
...since your manager does not seem to mind buy a lock, lock your locker and dump the part timers stuff where you found yours. fumbling with a lock is a hassle, i know but worth it. money i.d.'s credit cards can disappear other things that are not yours can appear and implicate you in who knows what. ms. part-time seems to think she has the full time job already.
...again, she has no business touching your belongings!
it's just awful when a workplace has two different class workers, i had my own difficulties with part-timers breathing down my neck for years and causing trouble every day. can't help you with your other troubles, it's tough out there.

..I thought [ HE ] was joking...because [
SHE ] is only a part-timer.

These two items, along with your handle stuck out with me.

It seems your boss is male, the person who threw out your stuff is male and your boss suggested you 'claim turf' against a part timer who is female.

This behavior is outrageous and would not be accepted in a 3rd grade classroom!

You appear to be working in a male hierarchy that is very juvenile.

Regarding OT, you state that you FEEL you have been forced to work more than your 40 hour work week. Unless you have something written down in an email or if your boss told you explicitly to work OT, a lawyer may not be able to help.

If you feel bullied, and it certainly seems that your are being bullied, a lawyer can certainly assist.

Though The Boss Was Bipolar Written by cushion on 01/12/2009This guy was just trying to do what needed to be done and nothing more. When the supervisor needed something at least she gave our dept a few days notice. Kudo's for that.

But being the only female in a small office of 3 I had to "prove" to my boss why my house needed to be changed.

Just because I lived farther away after I got married that was not his fault. No sympathy. He was easier to talk to at times, but he had an answer for everything that we talked about. It was worst when it was work related. I did my job to the best of my abilities and I even created work for myself to do monthly and annual logs to showcase how much the company was spending on certain supplies and it was broken down by unit. When my boss asked for help I gave it my all and he at times appreciated it. I guess at times it was his tone of voice towards me. Because I worked during the evening shift and the nursing staff would "squeal" to the supervisor then my boss would hear it. Like I said he had an answer for everything....At times I left the office crying and on my bus ride home. He didn't care how long it took for me to get home. I chose not to drive our car, that was our way of saving money and it really helped. I truly had the best 7
yrs of my work attitude there..I just wish I could go back...Not a chance.

I moved on and now I'm at a new place of employment and it's way, way closer to my home. Heck even closer than my recent job and I'm getting a kick out of being with kids.

So, I went from health care worker, to resort/retail worker to tutor with kids...Yes!

It's obvious that you were very frustrated. I hope things improve for you. Honestly, however, it's difficult to understand what you're talking about.

Posted by MyOpinion on 08/07/2009:
I agree you sound very frustrated and I'm glad things have improved. It is my opinion, however, that business is business and matters/circumstances of a personal nature should be kept out of the workplace. It is one thing to experience an unforseeable circumstance such as an illness/accident but the location of your residence in relation to work isn't your employers concern. It seems as though you may have expected certain considerations, but that wouldn't be fair to workers living in close proximity.

Why me? Written by What is a handle? on 01/07/2009So I came into work today and my boss IM'd me asking me if I had been to the doctor about a cough that I have had for a little over a week now. I told her that I do not have medical insurance but I have been taking over the counter meds for my cough. She then told me that if my cough is not taken care of that I can no longer come to work! I got the cough from a co-worker that gave it to about five of us but I am the only one that was given the ultimatum of stop coughing or you're fired? And yet my employer does not provide me with medical insurance either? Does this sound like I should look into legal counsil? HELP!Read 4 Replies   |   Add a Reply

sorry to hear what you are suffering...am there, there is yuckky mold at work in the ceiling and my boss won't fix it, his slim staff are sick with respiratory illnesses constantly and this has been going on for years, you should check into the laws, and it is definitely not fair that you are being singled out for coughing...I can empathize with you. I wish I could give you more help, but I am checking into the laws myself and it is long and tedious, hang in there and know you have people who care and understand,

Harassement Written by f on 11/30/2008For seven months, I worked at Anagram, the balloon manufacturing company, where I had three superiors from hell. From the first day I started there, they acted like satin. Being a woman, doing work that mostly men there did, they treated me like an incompetent individual. The team lead stared me down and made sexual jokes. My supervisor never made much of an effort to get to know me, much less train me or see how my job was going. Being caucasian, I could tell he had a problem with me, as he had mostly foreigners working there...and he was an african-american. He had his pets, and they were mostly "minorities".

They withheld information from me, failed to train me properly, harrassed me daily, following me into the breakroom everytime I went on breaks, gossiped about me, messed around with my machine, refused to help me when I requested help, sabotaged my work and much more...

Lets break this down into sections shall we?

From what you are telling us you worked under conditions of sexual harassment, reverse-discrimination (I hate that term ... discrimination is discrimination - period!), and those are the laws I DO know ... There may be others laws broken as well. Sounds like a trip to EEOC to me!

Posted by SouthernProgrammer on 12/01/2008:
You were definitely harrassed but I seriously doubt it will be worth the time and effort to prove it. Know that you did nothing wrong and under the circumstances presented you could not have changed anything. It's good you got out of there.

California Lutheran University (CLU): Senator McCathy Lives!! Written by MistDaemon on 08/24/2008There are two other articles about CLU, but I think that this one may be the worst of all. Due to the other articles, I was terminated from California Lutheran University (CLU) due to "disloyalty". No kidding. It just reminds me of Senator McCathy.

This seems to violate the law since an employer can not prevent an employee from speaking out about working conditions, which is exactly what was done. Everything which was said was true. They also can not even prove who posted my story to this web site, but they don't care about that. CLU is just trying to silence the truth.

The reality is that I was not disloyal to CLU, in fact, I am very loyal to CLU, contrary to those who are currently running the place. What those in charge do not understand is that they are NOT California Lutheran University. They are just the current caretakers. In my opinion the current administration is corrupt, based on the definition on dictionary.com (corrupt or dishonest proceedings). The current administration feels that they can do anything that they want, including ignoring their own policies and even the law.

My desire is to restore the integrity to the administration of the University. It is important to get safety and issues of injustice corrected. Currently CLU would rather allow a person who seems to have serious mental issues around than the victim. Documenting this issue should also help if there are any other safety issues so that it can be documented that there is a known problem, especially if that particular person goes "postal".

A funny aspect, which shows how incompetent CLU is, the final check that they gave me was not valid. It required two signature, but they could not even read and understand that and so when I went to the bank to deposit it, the check was refused. I called the head of HR and that was very interesting. Originally I though that CLU's actions which intentional and done with malice, but a friend told me that he thought it was just stupidity. The conversation of the head of HR seems to confirm that opinion. CLU was required to get the check to me since they had violated the law by not giving me a valid check, so they were going to have a person delivery it to me. The head of HR wanted to know where I wanted it delivered. I told her that I was not home, so I needed to have the person call me, at the same number she had just called me at, so that depending on when the person called, I could tell them where to meet me. She could not seem to understand such a simple concept and I had to repeat myself multiple times. Eventually the person called and we arranged to meet at the bank, so that this time the check could be deposited. It is amazing how such a simple thing could confuse CLU.

The contract that I had with CLU required that they give two months notice. I was told by the interim provost that my health care coverage would continue for two months, but the paperwork that they gave me says that all coverage ends at the end of this month. This violates the two month notice clause in the contract. I have tried to talk to CLU about this, but CLU is doing their typical no response. This also is in keeping with the other lies I have been told by CLU. CLU said that if I signed an agreement to hold them harmless, that they would give me two more months pay and that the health care would also continue for those two months. I suspect that this is just another lie, but it also shows that they know that there is an issue with their actions.

It also seems that CLU knows that they are violating the law as they refuse to allow such meetings to be recorded. The head of security, who I was told used to be an FBI agent (which does not reflect well on the FBI in my opinion) said that both parties had to CONSENT to the recording. The reality is that both parties has to be informed that it is being recorded. It just shows that CLU is trying to hide what they are doing since most likely they know that it would look very bad for them in front of a judge and jury.

I forgot to mention something interesting. I heard from multiple sources that the president of CLU used to go to an Episcopal Church, which switched to a Lutheran Church. It was suggested to me that he did it to further his career at CLU and it seems that it works as he then became president.

Posted by MistDaemon on 08/28/2008:
One good thing is that there is one person who seems to respond at CLU. All the rest prefer to refuse to answer any questions.

I found the reference to the protected speech:

Retaliation/Discrimination

Any employee, who is discharged, threatened with discharge, demoted,
suspended, or in any manner discriminated and/or retaliated against in the
terms and conditions of his or her employment for engaging in a "protected
activity" under the jurisdiction of the labor commissioner may file a
complaint with the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE). Examples
of some protected activities include filing or threatening to file a wage
claim with the Labor Commissioner's office, taking time off to serve on a
jury, complaining about a safety or health hazard, and/or refusing to perform
work that may be hazardous. For a list of the specific
anti-discrimination/retaliation statutes/orders under the jurisdiction of the
labor commissioner, click here.
